This one's a study in contrasts. Illinois has won 19 of its last 26 games under Bret Bielema and just handed Maryland a 24-6 beatdown the last time these two met. The Illini go into this season with a new face under center in Katin Houser, a grad transfer who threw for 6,438 yards and 43 touchdowns across stops at Michigan State and East Carolina, brought in to replace the departed Luke Altmyer. Maryland, meanwhile, is trying to climb out of back-to-back 4-8 seasons behind sophomore Malik Washington, who flashed real starter upside as a true freshman.

Washington threw for 2,963 yards and 17 touchdowns last year while adding four more scores on the ground, and he's got one of the most experienced rosters in the country around him — Maryland ranks 27th nationally in returning FBS snaps. That continuity matters for a program that's lost six games in a row before, and it gives Mike Locksley a real foundation to work with instead of another teardown. The catch is Illinois isn't just running it back either; Bielema lost essentially his entire defensive coaching staff this offseason, which means both sidelines are dealing with real transition even if the overall trajectories point in opposite directions.
