Illinois brings a functioning program and a starting quarterback who's actually played on this field before, while Michigan State is asking a first-year staff and a redshirt sophomore QB to figure things out on the fly. That gap in stability is the whole ballgame here, not just a name on the roster. Until the Spartans show the new system working against real competition, the safer lean is the team that already knows how to win these.

There's a built-in subplot here before anyone even snaps the ball. Illinois' new starting quarterback, Katin Houser, began his college career at Michigan State before landing in Champaign, and he'll take the field against his old program on Friday, October 9. The Illini are replacing a lot up front and at the skill spots, but the guy under center has actually played meaningful snaps in this building before.
Michigan State isn't hiding from where it's at. The Spartans moved on from Jonathan Smith after a brutal two-year stretch that bottomed out in the bottom third of the Big Ten in both total offense and total defense, and they handed the keys to Pat Fitzgerald on a five-year, $30 million deal to rebuild the thing from the studs. That means a redshirt sophomore, Alessio Milivojevic, is stepping in as the new QB1 behind a roster that got a 32-player transfer facelift over the winter.

Illinois, meanwhile, is trying to prove last year wasn't a fluke. The Illini went 9-4 in 2025, beat Tennessee in the Music City Bowl, and posted the program's first back-to-back winning Big Ten seasons since 1992 under Bielema. The catch is they're replacing quarterback Luke Altmyer, left tackle JC Davis and edge rusher Gabe Jacas all at once, with roughly half the 2026 roster brand new to the program.

That roster churn cuts both ways. Michigan State has the 15th-oldest roster in the FBS and the most experienced group in the Big Ten on paper, which sounds like an edge until you remember it's being run through a completely new coaching staff and scheme installation. Illinois has the opposite problem — a proven system and a coach who knows how to win in the league, but a lot of new faces plugged into the spots that matter most.

Both sides are selling versions of the same idea heading into the fall: Illinois wants to show its rise is sustainable even with new pieces, Michigan State wants to show the Fitzgerald hire was worth the gamble right away.
