Illinois State just played for a national championship. Northern Illinois just lost its head coach to the NFL. This 58th meeting of an in-state series that's dead even isn't the buy game it looks like on paper.

Northern Illinois still carries the built-in edges of an FBS program hosting its opener — deeper roster, more scholarships, home crowd. That's usually enough to get past an FCS opponent even in a down year, and it's the lean here. But this isn't a normal buy-game mismatch given the record and the interim coaching situation, so treat it as a lean, not a lock.

Start with the quarterback picture, because neither side has a settled one. NIU's spring showcase turned into an open four-man scramble — redshirt seniors Jalen Macon and Ean Hamric, sophomore Brady Davidson and freshman Bryshawn Brown all got runs with the first team — and nobody locked down the job. Illinois State has its own vacancy after Tommy Rittenhouse, who threw for 3,568 yards and 40 touchdowns in 2025, ran out of eligibility. Redshirt freshman Beckham Pellant and USC transfer Gage Roy are fighting it out to replace him.
The bigger story in DeKalb is on the sideline. Thomas Hammock — the coach who delivered NIU's signature win over Notre Dame and steadied the program for seven years — bolted in February to coach running backs for the Seattle Seahawks. Defensive coordinator Rob Harley is running the show as interim head coach for a team that just went 3-9, and NIU is simultaneously making its first trip through a new conference, the Mountain West, after years in the MAC. That's a lot of change to absorb before Week 1 even snaps.

Illinois State, by contrast, is the picture of continuity. Brock Spack is back for his 18th season after directing arguably the best year in program history — an 8-3 regular season, a run to the FCS national title game, and four straight road playoff wins over ranked opposition, including a stunner over No. 1 North Dakota State. The Redbirds finished 12-4 and lost the championship to Montana State in overtime. Markets haven't posted numbers on this one yet, but a program coming off that kind of run doesn't show up to a rebuilding host as a pushover.
History backs that up. This series sits at 24-24-9 all-time, and Illinois State has gone 18-3 on the road over the last two seasons, including wins over FBS Colorado State and Northwestern in years past. NIU still has the roster depth that comes with being the FBS side, and home openers at Huskie Stadium have swung the program's way before. But an interim staff trying to win its first game with an unsettled quarterback room is a different animal than the Hammock-era Huskies that made their name upsetting ranked opponents.

Whichever quarterback question gets answered first could decide this one. If NIU's staff settles on a starter in fall camp and gets a clean read on the interim-coach bump that sometimes juices a program in year one, this looks like a normal, if shaky, home win. If Illinois State's newcomer at quarterback plays anything like Rittenhouse did behind that veteran-heavy roster, the Redbirds have the pedigree and the road résumé to walk into DeKalb and make it 25 wins in the series.
