The quarterback competition that ran through camp was mostly theater. Katin Houser, the East Carolina transfer who started all 12 games there last season, went 8-4, and threw for just over 3,000 yards with 19 touchdowns against 6 interceptions, is Illinois' starter, and Bret Bielema has said as much all offseason. "There's no one more excited to play this game than Katin," Bielema told reporters this week, adding that Houser is "super excited to play someone in another jersey" after two years wearing East Carolina's, per Yahoo Sports. The pitch that got Houser to Champaign was the same one Bielema used to turn Luke Altmyer into one of the most decorated quarterbacks in program history — three NFL legends the coach had personally worked with — and Houser bought in this January, per On3's Pete Nakos.
The bigger unknown is Bobby Hauck's defense, and Hauck himself is playing down the idea that it is locked into one shape. The former longtime Montana head coach, hired after Aaron Henry left for Notre Dame, has said his unit will "hew to the personnel" rather than force a strict 3-3-5, because "unless you're just really, really, really talented, you don't get to just line up and stop people." What he's installed instead leans on disguise and movement: "there's not a lot of hitting and reading in this defense," Hauck said. "It's very assignment-oriented. When the ball is snapped, you're going." That's being asked of a line and linebacker corps that returns zero starters after Illinois lost 5 linemen to the transfer portal, per 247Sports.
UAB gives Hauck a specific problem to solve, not a generic one. First-year head coach Alex Mortensen — promoted after Trent Dilfer was fired 4 games into last season — wants to spread the field and throw it, finishing 118th nationally in run-play percentage a year ago. His top weapon is senior receiver Kaleb Brown, an Ohio State-and-Iowa transfer making a homecoming of sorts: the Chicago native caught a career-high 7 passes for 71 yards against Illinois while at Iowa in 2023, and Mortensen says Brown is healthy again after a lower-body injury slowed him this spring.
Last season ended on a walk-off over Tennessee
Illinois finished last season by winning 4 of its last 5, capped by a 30-28 win over Tennessee on December 30 that closed out a nine-win year. That stretch included a 35-13 win over Rutgers, a 24-6 win over Maryland, a road loss at Wisconsin, and a 20-13 win over Northwestern before the bowl trip.
None of that carries into a record that sits at 0-0 like everyone else's this week. But it's the backdrop for why tonight feels bigger than a typical opener: a program replacing its quarterback, its defensive coordinator and roughly half its roster is trying to prove last season's finish was a floor, not a ceiling.
