Katin Houser needed one half to answer every question about Illinois' quarterback room, closing his debut with a 54-yard Hail Mary as the Illini opened 1-0 with a 42-23 win over UAB.

Katin Houser needed exactly one half to answer the question that hung over Illinois all camp. The East Carolina transfer went 13 of 17 for 182 yards and 3 touchdowns, added a rushing score of his own, and needed every bit of it against a UAB team that ran 79 plays to Illinois' 43 and out-gained the Illini 413 to 332 yards. None of that showed up on the scoreboard: Illinois scored twice in its first 6 plays, built a 21-13 halftime lead, and pulled away for a 42-23 opening win.
UAB42-23The signature moment was a 54-yard Hail Mary from Houser to Ty Robinson at the horn to end the first half — Illinois' first successful one since 2019 — and Bret Bielema was still marveling at the arm behind it afterward. "I thought Katin had a 50-yard arm," Bielema said. "I think he surprised some people there." It also happened to be Robinson's first catch as an Illini, the kind of debut a transfer receiver dreams about.

Bobby Hauck's defense, breaking in a line and linebacker corps that returned zero starters, looked like exactly what it was: a first date. UAB piled up 189 rushing yards and Illinois' tackling was shaky for stretches, but 5 red-zone trips produced nothing better than a field goal for the Blazers. The finish was the kind Hauck would draw up himself — a Will Holmes pressure forced UAB's Ryder Burton into a fourth-down heave that linebacker Ismael Kante picked off and returned 59 yards for the clinching score.
A captain then, a captain now: Brit Miller gets his flowers
Before the Illini scored a point, they honored one of their own. Brit Miller, the linebacker who captained Illinois' 2008 team and closed that senior season with 132 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 3 forced fumbles, served as Thursday's honorary captain, walking out for the coin toss under the account's own line: "A captain then. A captain now."
Miller went on to play 5 NFL seasons after going undrafted, first as a special-teamer in Carolina and San Francisco, then as St. Louis' special teams captain in 2012 — the kind of path that eventually lands a guy back on the sideline he started from. It's the sort of pregame moment that gets buried under a scoreboard full of touchdowns, but it's the thread tying this year's Illini back to the ones who set the standard.
3 tight ends are already out for the year, and 2 more join the list before Duke
Illinois opened the year already down 3 tight ends for the season, per Covers' injury tracker — Grant Smith, foot-surgery patient B. Thurman and T. Hollinger are all out for the remainder of 2026, a brutal number to lose from one room before a snap was played. Wide receiver A. Perry is also done for a while, headed for shoulder surgery with no return timetable given.
Linebacker D. Brown and receiver J. Platt both sat out the UAB opener with undisclosed injuries, per Covers, and neither played. Now 2 more names have joined the sheet ahead of Duke: running back J. Forster (knee) and receiver N. Rankin (leg) are both listed questionable for September 12, and Covers' language on a questionable is a genuine unknown rather than a formality — worth watching once the Duke game plan takes shape.
Duke arrives without Mensah, and Illinois already has last year's receipt
Duke opens its own season tonight against Tulane with a very different quarterback than the one that gave Illinois trouble a year ago — Darian Mensah left the program for Miami this offseason, and San Jose State transfer Walker Eget has been named the new starter, per Duke's own preseason depth chart. The Blue Devils finished last season with a 42-39 win over Arizona State, but this will be their first look at Illinois since last September, when the Illini rolled to a 45-19 road win at Wallace Wade Stadium.
This time the rematch is in Champaign, on September 12 vs. Duke at Gies Memorial Stadium, and the line opened with Illinois favored by 8.5 with the total set at 56.5 — a number that reads as middling for a team that just hung 42 points on somebody. Illinois already has the receipt from last year's game in Durham; now it gets to defend it at home.
