Iowa's chasing a 10-win season without the winningest quarterback college football ever had. Northwestern's hoping a Michigan State transfer finally unlocks its offense. Neither answer is settled by the time these two meet in November.

Iowa's the program with the sturdier floor — a defense-and-physicality identity that travels well and doesn't rely on a first-year starter figuring things out on the road. Northwestern's ceiling hinges on Chiles taking a real leap, and betting on that happening cleanly by a road trip in November is asking a lot. Until Northwestern shows it, side with the more established outfit.

Iowa
  • 9-4 in 2025, ReliaQuest Bowl win over ranked Vanderbilt
  • Ferentz has most wins by a Big Ten coach
  • 4 losses came by combined 15 points to ranked foes
  • Replacing 2,000 total yards, 27 TDs at QB
  • Starting job still an open competition entering the year
Northwestern
  • Braun made bowls in 2 of first 3 seasons, a first
  • Blew out Central Michigan 34-7 in bowl game
  • New OC has track record developing passers
  • Chiles has history of struggling under pressure
  • Whole offensive outlook hinges on one transfer's growth

This is a Big Ten game about identity more than star power. Iowa is 2 years into life without Cade McNamara's production at quarterback and is turning the job over to whichever of Jeremy Hecklinski or Hank Brown wins the room — a real competition, not a formality, between a smaller, aggressive dual-threat and a bigger, traditional pocket arm. Northwestern, meanwhile, is banking on Aidan Chiles, the Michigan State transfer with the strongest arm on the roster and a well-documented habit of pressing when things go sideways.

Kirk Ferentz enters his 28th season having already passed Woody Hayes for the most wins by a Big Ten coach, and last year's 9-4 Hawkeyes squad backed it up — 4 of their losses came by a combined 15 points to teams ranked in the top 20, and they closed the year by throttling No. 14 Vanderbilt 34-27 in the ReliaQuest Bowl. That's a program with a real floor, even while it retools under center.

David Braun has quietly built something at Northwestern too. He got the Wildcats bowl-eligible in 2 of his first 3 seasons — a first in program history — and last year's group went 7-6 before blowing out Central Michigan 34-7 in the GameAbove Sports Bowl. New offensive coordinator Neuheisel gives Chiles a track record of developing passers, which matters given how far Northwestern's ceiling depends on him cutting down the mistakes that plagued him in East Lansing.

By the time this one kicks off at 11:00 PM ET on Friday, November 6, both quarterback battles should be long resolved, and the shape of each team's season will be much clearer. Iowa's defense and physical, run-first approach have kept Ferentz's program competitive even in down offensive years, which is exactly the kind of test that exposes whether Chiles has actually taken the leap Northwestern needs.

Injuries and depth-chart shakeups are inevitable over a full season, and by November the picture at both programs will look different than it does now. Worth watching either way: whether Iowa's QB competition produces a clear WINNER by midseason, and whether Northwestern's offensive line has progressed enough to keep Chiles upright against a defense built to make quarterbacks uncomfortable.
