Jacksonville State has won 3 of its last 5, including its Conference USA opener over Middle Tennessee, behind dual-threat QB Caden Creel. Kennesaw State, last year's league champion, has lost 3 straight as of now and hasn't topped 17 points since its opener. The game likely comes down to whether the Owls' defense, which kept Arkansas State to 17, can hold up long enough for an offense that has struggled to score. No odds are posted yet.

Jacksonville State Gamecocks
  • Creel: 241 passing, 119 rushing vs Middle Tennessee
  • Already 1-0 in Conference USA
  • Won 2 straight as of this week
  • Blown out 33-7 at North Dakota State
  • Lost 29-27 at Ohio on the road
  • Best wins all came at home
Kennesaw State Owls
  • Defense held Arkansas State to 17
  • Home field after 2 straight road losses
  • 47-0 opener shows the ceiling at home
  • 17 points or fewer in 3 straight
  • Failed on 2 fourth downs at Arkansas State
  • Collins managed just 129 passing yards

This one starts with the quarterbacks. Caden Creel threw for 241 yards and ran for 119 in Jacksonville State's 23-13 win over Middle Tennessee, which was the Conference USA opener for both teams. With that many yards through the air and on the ground, Kennesaw State's defense can't just commit to one thing. Rickie Collins went 17-of-24 for 129 yards and ran for 52 in the Owls' loss at Arkansas State. That's a tidy line, but it didn't move the ball much.

Kennesaw State's defense did its part in Jonesboro. It held Arkansas State to 17, and the Red Wolves needed their last 10 points to win. The Owls also came up short on 2 fourth downs, and those 2 stops swung the game. A 3-point loss is close, but it still counts as a loss, and the problem is up front: Kennesaw State hasn't scored more than 17 since the 47-0 opener against West Georgia. Neither team has an injury listed right now. The board has no prices posted yet either.

The seasons look very different. Jacksonville State lost its opener at North Dakota State 33-7, then went 3-1. The only loss in that run was 29-27 at Ohio. It has also won 2 one-score-ish games at home, 31-27 over Georgia Southern and the 23-13 win over Middle Tennessee. Kennesaw State opened by beating West Georgia 47-0 and has lost 3 straight since, as of this week.

Beating West Georgia by 47 is the only thing flattering Kennesaw State's numbers. The other results are a 31-17 home loss to Georgia State, a 42-9 loss at Tennessee and the loss at Arkansas State. Those look like a team whose defense can hang around while its offense can't finish drives. That plays right into what Jacksonville State wants to do. Creel can carry the ball himself, and when he's also throwing for over 200 yards, a defense stays on the field for a long time.

Jacksonville State isn't bulletproof. The 33-7 loss at North Dakota State was ugly, and a 2-point loss at Ohio shows how thin the margins have been. Most of its best football has also come at home, and this game is on the road. Still, a defending league champion that's a win away from 1-4 has a lot to prove on its own field, and the Gamecocks already have their conference win.

Kickoff is on a Wednesday night in Kennesaw, and 10 days is plenty of time for these teams to change. For now, one team has a quarterback who can beat you 2 ways, and the other is still trying to find its offense.
