Jacksonville State has more FBS reps and a proven dual-threat in Caleb Creel, but NDSU's program has simply won more football games than anyone in FCS history, and that identity doesn't vanish overnight.

North Dakota State hands the offense to Nathan Hayes, a senior with all of 63 career pass attempts, replacing Cole Payton, who threw for 16 touchdowns and ran for 777 yards a year ago. Jacksonville State brings back junior Caleb Creel, who accounted for more than 2,500 total yards and 16 touchdowns last season. It's a steep experience gap at the sport's most important position, and it's landing right as the Bison attempt the biggest jump in program history.

This isn't NDSU's first look at Jacksonville State. The two met in the 2015 FCS championship, where the Bison rolled to a 37-10 win over a Gamecocks team that came in as the No. 1 seed. Jax State has since built its own credibility, going 9-5 under second-year coach Charles Kelly and winning the CUSA championship game before beating rival Troy in a bowl. NDSU, meanwhile, is chasing something no program has done quite like this — walking into an FBS-and-Mountain West debut with 10 national titles already on the resume.

The stakes are higher than a typical Week 0 tune-up. A rule change means NDSU is immediately eligible for the Mountain West title game and any bowl bid despite reclassifying straight into FBS, so this isn't a gimme they can afford to treat like an exhibition. For Jacksonville State, it's a chance to atone for that title-game beatdown and open the Kelly era's second season with a marquee road statement in the Fargodome.
