This one carries real history. Ohio and Jacksonville State met for the first time ever last December in the Cure Bowl, and the Bobcats needed every bit of a 30-27 win to close out an 11-win season. Now they're doing it again, only this time Jacksonville State gets a shot at revenge on the road instead of a neutral field, and it's Ohio breaking in a new head coach for the occasion.
John Hauser takes over the Bobcats after going 1-0 as interim coach in that same Cure Bowl win, and he inherits a program that just posted 9 wins and a MAC championship. The defense is the calling card — Ohio allowed the third-fewest points in the conference in 2025 — but Hauser has been candid that a lot of this roster hasn't logged real game snaps yet. Jacksonville State counters with a dual-threat quarterback who accounted for over 1,500 passing yards and 9 touchdowns through the air, plus 1,076 yards and 7 scores on the ground last season, giving Charles Kelly's offense a genuine engine to build around.

The Gamecocks aren't walking in unscathed, though. Offensive coordinator Clint Trickett left for Arkansas this offseason, tight ends coach Taylor Housewright is stepping up to replace him, and leading rusher Cam Cook is now at West Virginia. That's a lot of continuity to replace for a program that's still trying to prove its 3 straight 9-win seasons weren't a fluke.
Frank Solich Field has been a fortress lately — Ohio has won 13 straight there and 23 of its last 24 home games since the turf went in back in 2022. That streak matters here because this is technically the Bobcats' home opener, coming right after a marquee non-conference trip that will have tested this young roster before Jacksonville State ever shows up.

Kelly's defense has to replace a 6-7, 295-pound end who racked up 43 tackles and 4.5 sacks a year ago, but the staff brought in a Clemson transfer with legit length to fill that void.
