Two of Conference USA's top contenders meet on Saturday, November 14, with Jacksonville State defending its regular-season crown and Western Kentucky trying to prove a roster overhaul hasn't cost it a step.

Jacksonville State returns the more proven engine in Caleb Creel and enters as the league's reigning regular-season champ, while Western Kentucky is still figuring out who its quarterback even is. Jacksonville State enters as the team to beat after winning the CUSA regular season a year ago, and if Caleb Creel keeps producing like he did in 2025 — 1,076 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground to go with over 1,500 passing yards and 9 scores through the air — the Gamecocks will be tough to slow down again. Western Kentucky counters with a fresh face under center in Brock Glenn, the Florida State transfer set to get his first real shot to prove he's more than the 6-touchdown, 7-interception passer he was in Tallahassee.
WKU has a much bigger roster question mark heading into 2026 than Jax State does. Sixteen players have already left via the portal and 13 have come in, leaving a rewritten offensive line and a new-look QB room that needs to jell somewhere along a grueling nonconference stretch. Jacksonville State's turnover is lower-stakes by comparison, mostly a coaching shuffle after offensive coordinator Clint Trickett left for Arkansas and tight ends coach Taylor Housewright was promoted to replace him. Books haven't posted a number on this one yet, but expect the market to sharpen fast once both rosters take real shape in fall camp.

Tyson Helton doesn't rebuild often. His Hilltoppers have won at least 8 games in five of his six seasons, and last year's New Orleans Bowl win over Southern Miss capped a 9-4 season that kept WKU squarely in the CUSA title conversation. The bigger concern in Bowling Green is the calendar — trips to Nevada, Georgia and Indiana to open the year will bruise a team still figuring out its identity, and how healthy that group looks by mid-November says a lot about whether Helton's program is still ascending or just catching its breath.
Jacksonville State, meanwhile, is chasing the thing that got away — a CUSA title game appearance that ended in a loss. Charles Kelly's group has continuity at the most important position on the field in Creel, and that alone makes the Gamecocks the safer bet to still be playing meaningful football when this one kicks off on Saturday, November 14.
