James Madison didn't just win the Sun Belt East last year, it went 11-1 with an 8-0 mark in conference and put itself in the Group of Five's College Football Playoff conversation. Then head coach Bob Chesney bolted for UCLA less than a day after clinching the title, and JMU turned to Billy Napier to keep the machine running. Napier walks into a roster that still has 8 players on Phil Steele's Preseason All-Sun Belt team and a program that was voted the East's favorite with 11 of 14 first-place votes in the coaches poll.
The obvious question is whether Napier is the right guy to not screw it up. He was fired at Florida during a 3-4 start to the 2025 season, so this is as much a redemption assignment as a promotion. The talent gap here is real, though, and JMU's roster was built to win now regardless of who's holding the clipboard.

Back-to-back losing seasons, including a 5-8 finish and a 2-6 Sun Belt mark in 2025 that ended with a Birmingham Bowl loss, forced first-year coach Dowell Loggains into a full teardown. The Mountaineers brought in 66 newcomers this offseason, 35 of them transfer portal additions, loading up specifically on defensive backs and proven playmakers while banking on high school talent up front for the future.
