This is the first look at a James Madison team that barely resembles the one that made history last season. Bob Chesney bolted for UCLA less than a day after winning the Sun Belt title, and Billy Napier — fired at Florida a year earlier — is now running the show in Harrisonburg. JMU returns just 5 starters, and the QB room is a full rebuild after Alonza Barnett III hit the portal and Matthew Sluka graduated. Memphis transfer Arrington Maiden is the presumptive answer, but he'll have made almost no career starts by the time Georgia Southern circles Friday, October 9 on the calendar.
Georgia Southern isn't dealing with a coaching change — Clay Helton is back for year 5 — but the roster hole might be bigger. OJ Arnold, who ran for over 1,000 yards and closed the year as Birmingham Bowl MVP, is off to the NFL Draft, taking the engine of last season's offense with him. Helton's answer at quarterback is a battle between Max Johnson, a well-traveled veteran of LSU, Texas A&M and North Carolina who's coming back from a broken leg, and Turner Helton, the coach's son and a second-year transfer from Western Kentucky. Neither has locked down the job yet, and how that shakes out will shape everything about this offense.

Zoom out and the gap between these two programs is still wide on paper. JMU was the first Sun Belt team ever to reach the College Football Playoff, finished the year ranked in both major polls, and Sun Belt coaches still picked the Dukes to repeat as East champs with 11 of 14 first-place votes. Georgia Southern, despite the bowl win, was tabbed 4th in the East. That gap is exactly why oddsmakers will lean JMU no matter how green the Dukes look at quarterback.
The history here cuts against Georgia Southern's favor lately, too. James Madison rolled the Eagles 35-10 in last year's Sun Belt opener, part of an 8-0 run through conference play that carried JMU all the way to Eugene for a CFP first-round date with Oregon.
