TCU has owned this series for over a decade, and Kansas shows up on Friday, October 30 trying to answer a QB question with something other than a familiar face.

TCU comes in as the far more established program right now — a 9-4, Alamo Bowl-winning season, a coach in Sonny Dykes who isn't rebuilding anything, and a series record that's lopsided in the Horned Frogs' favor. Kansas is the side with more swirling questions, from the quarterback battle to back-to-back non-bowl campaigns, and that uncertainty is exactly why backing TCU to win outright is the safer read this far out.

Kansas
  • Kotelnicki back calling plays after 2023 breakthrough
  • Brought in ~30 transfers to reload roster
  • Back-to-back 5-7, non-bowl seasons
  • Longtime starter Jalon Daniels gone, QB battle unresolved
TCU
  • 9-4 season capped by Alamo Bowl win
  • Won last 5 meetings in this series
  • Lost 3 defensive starters to NFL Draft
  • New starting QB Craig has no Big 12 experience

Both programs are walking into this one breaking in new starting quarterbacks. Kansas is finally moving on from Jalon Daniels, who exhausted his eligibility and signed with the Buccaneers, leaving a battle between Rice transfer Chase Jenkins and returners Cole Ballard and Isaiah Marshall. TCU's answer is Jaden Craig, a Harvard graduate transfer and two-time Walter Payton Award finalist who's turned heads this spring with his legs, stepping in for Josh Hoover after Hoover left for Indiana.

Neither side is replacing its quarterback in a vacuum, either. TCU also lost three defensive difference-makers to the NFL Draft — Jardarius Clark, Kaleb Elarms-Orr and Namdi Obiazor all came off a defense that helped get the Horned Frogs to 9 wins. Kansas, meanwhile, went out and grabbed roughly 30 transfers this cycle and brought back Andy Kotelnicki as the offensive play-caller, betting that continuity in the building matters more than continuity at quarterback.

History isn't doing Kansas any favors here. TCU leads the all-time series 27-9-4 and has won 8 of the last 9 meetings since both joined the Big 12, including the last 5 in a row — Kansas's only win in that stretch came back in 2018. Sonny Dykes has the program in a steadier spot than Lance Leipold does right now, and that gap shows up in how the two staffs are talking about this fall.

Preseason markets reflect the disparity: BetMGM pegged Kansas's 2026 win total at just 5.5, while CBS Sports' early model has TCU finishing 8-4 and picks the Horned Frogs to beat Kansas specifically. That's not a knock on Leipold's ceiling — his 2023 team went 9-4 — but back-to-back 5-7, non-bowl seasons have raised the temperature in Lawrence, and this game lands right in the stretch where Kansas needs results, not just progress.

TCU still has real pieces back on defense to lean on while Craig gets comfortable — Jamel Johnson, a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist at safety, and fourth-year end Zachary Chapman give Andy Avalos a foundation even after the draft losses. For Kansas, the story is whether Kotelnicki's scheme and a portal-built roster can mask an unsettled quarterback room by the time late October rolls around. It's a long runway between now and kickoff, and how these two QB battles resolve over fall camp will shape this matchup far more than anything on the schedule says today.
