TLDR: Both teams are 1-2 in Big 12 play, and the loser in Tempe drops to 1-3 with half a league schedule still to play. Kansas State just beat Kansas for the 18th straight time. Arizona State just gave up 53 to Texas Tech and changed quarterbacks at halftime.

Kansas State (4-2) visits Arizona State (3-3) with both teams at 1-2 in the Big 12, so the loser falls well behind in the league race. The Wildcats run the ball through Joe Jackson with Avery Johnson at quarterback. Arizona State has given up 48 or more 3 times and hasn't named a starting quarterback after pulling Cutter Boley at halftime against Texas Tech. No odds have been posted yet.

Kansas State Wildcats
  • Joe Jackson ran for 159 against Kansas
  • Avery Johnson dangerous scrambling, returned after the hit
  • Faces a defense that allowed 502 yards
  • Sloppy against Kansas, fell behind by 10 early
  • QB depth thin: Duff out, Barnett questionable
  • Lost at Cincinnati, 16-35 at home to Houston
Arizona State Sun Devils
  • Keene threw 2 TDs in his relief half
  • Home in Tempe, beat Hawai'i 30-12 there
  • Allowed 48, 55 and 53 in its 3 losses
  • Starting QB unsettled after Boley's 2 interceptions
  • LB Fiaseu and CB Rawls both out

The story of this one starts at quarterback. Avery Johnson threw for 203 yards and a score as Kansas State beat Kansas 35-24. He also got hurt on a 59-yard scramble, came straight back, and the Wildcats scored on the very next snap. The report suggests he's fine, but K-State's depth behind him is thin: D. Duff is out with an undisclosed injury and B. Barnett is questionable with a lower-body issue. Arizona State's quarterback situation is less settled. Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley went 5-of-10 for 124 yards and 2 interceptions in the first half at Texas Tech and was pulled at the break.

Mikey Keene looked good when he came in, going 25-of-34 for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns in the second half. Most of that came with the game already gone, though, and Arizona State hasn't said who starts Saturday, October 24. That's the biggest open question of the week. Boley got the job for a reason, and Keene just made the case that it should be his. Whoever starts will face a K-State defense that gave up 35 at home to Houston but held Washington State to 7.

The tougher problem for the Sun Devils is the other side of the ball. Texas Tech put up 502 yards on them. J'Koby Williams ran for a career-high 165 yards with touchdown runs of 62 and 38, and Ben Roberts returned an interception for another score. That's the third time this season Arizona State has allowed 48 or more, after 48 to Texas A&M and 55 to Baylor. The team that beat Hawai'i 30-12 is real, but it hasn't shown up against good opponents.

Kansas State's win over Kansas wasn't clean. The Wildcats fell behind by 10 early and made plenty of mistakes before taking control. What carried them was Joe Jackson, who ran for 159 yards and a touchdown. That's the matchup to watch, because Arizona State just let one back run for 165. The Sun Devils are also without linebacker Z. Fiaseu, who is out for the season, and cornerback L. Rawls, out indefinitely. If Jackson gets going early, Johnson won't need to throw much and can scramble when it suits him.

The weather won't be a factor: 74 degrees, clear and almost no wind at Mountain America Stadium. K-State's tight ends are thin, with W. Anciaux out for the year and A. Morrell out with no timetable. Receiver M. Lovett is questionable with an arm injury. Both teams have now lost twice in conference play, so this is close to an elimination game for anyone hoping for a Big 12 title run. Arizona State has to play defense for 60 minutes. K-State has to stop making mistakes on the road, where it already lost a close one at Cincinnati.
