South Carolina opens a make-or-break season against a Kent State team that was 0-12 just two years ago. On paper, this one shouldn't be close.

South Carolina is the far more talented roster with a returning starting quarterback who's already seen SEC snaps, going up against a MAC team still rebuilding from a winless season two years ago. There's essentially no path where Kent State walks out with the win here. This is about as safe a moneyline lean as the sport offers in Week 1.
Kent State
+Carney era shows real progress after 0-12 low
+5-7 finish snapped a 21-game losing streak
−overwhelming talent gap vs an SEC roster
−still building depth after years of losing
South Carolina
+Sellers returns for third year as starter
+new OC Briles brings a proven rushing scheme
−Beamer enters year six squarely on the hot seat
−offense regressed hard in a 4-8 2025 season
Shane Beamer doesn't have a lot of margin left after last year's 4-8 collapse, and the schedule at least gives him a soft landing spot to start over. Kent State went 0-12 in 2024 and climbed back to 5-7 last season under Mark Carney, who took the interim tag off late in the year and gets full credit for stopping the bleeding. That's real progress for a program that had lost 21 straight, but it's still a MAC team walking into Williams-Brice Stadium against a roster that opened 2025 ranked No. 13.
LaNorris Sellers is the whole storyline in Columbia. He was the breakout star of 2024, regressed hard as the offense fell apart around him in 2025, and is now back for a third year running a South Carolina attack retooled by new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. The expectation is a run-heavy, tempo-driven scheme built around Sellers' legs and arm, with Nitro Tuggle and tight end Brady Hunt giving him more to work with than he had a year ago. An opener against a MAC defense is about as gentle an introduction to a new system as a quarterback can get.

Kent State's path to relevance runs through discipline and not beating themselves, because talent-wise this is a steep climb. Carney's staff has been building the roster methodically rather than chasing a signature upset, and there's little in the profile of either team right now to suggest this is a trap game for the Gamecocks.

Recent form.
The bigger question for South Carolina isn't whether they win this one, it's whether the new-look offense looks competent doing it. Beamer needs demonstrable improvement out of the gate to quiet the hot seat noise, and a clean, high-scoring debut for Sellers and Briles' scheme would go a long way toward buying patience before the SEC slate gets hard.

Kent State's realistic goal here is competing for four quarters and building on the identity that got them to 5-7 a year ago. For South Carolina, it's about making a statement in year six of the Beamer era before anyone starts asking hard questions in October.
