UConn kicks off the Jason Candle era at home against an old, dormant rival it hasn't seen since 2023 — and the Huskies are betting a total roster overhaul pays off from Week 1.

UConn is the significantly more talented roster even mid-rebuild, and these FBS-hosting-FCS money games almost always go to the home side regardless of how unsettled the depth chart looks. Lafayette's defense lost real pieces this offseason, which only widens the gap. Back the Huskies here even with a first-year staff calling the shots.

Lafayette
  • 8-3 finish in 2025, No. 24 in FCS poll
  • Stable staff, Troxell entering 5th season
  • Starting QB DeNobile transferred to Florida State
  • Lost 12 players to portal, several defensive starters
UConn
  • Won 9 games in 2025, best stretch since mid-2000s
  • Hired proven MAC champion in Jason Candle
  • Brand new staff installing scheme from scratch
  • QB competition wide open, 40-plus new transfers to gel

This one's really about UConn figuring out who it is. Jim Mora is gone to Colorado State after back-to-back 9-win seasons, the best stretch the program has had since the mid-2000s, and in his place is Toledo's Jason Candle, a six-year hire who won 81 games and 2 MAC titles at his old job. He inherits a quarterback room that got blown up this offseason — Joe Fagnano is out of eligibility, other arms left in the portal — and rebuilt it with transfers Jake Merklinger and Kalieb Osborne plus incoming three-star Bo Polston, all fighting for the job in a brand new offense.

Add in more than 40 transfer additions and 64 total new signees, and Storrs is starting the season with a roster that barely resembles last year's 9-win group. That's not necessarily bad — Candle clearly upgraded the talent pool — but a Week 1 outing against an unfamiliar opponent is a rough proving ground for chemistry, especially with Maryland waiting at home the following week.

Lafayette, meanwhile, is the more settled program on paper, at least at the top. John Troxell enters his 5th season after leading the Leopards to an 8-3 finish and a No. 24 ranking in the FCS Coaches Poll last November — legitimately one of the better years in recent program history. But Lafayette's own portal cycle wasn't kind: quarterback Dean DeNobile left for Florida State, and the Leopards lost 12 players to the portal overall, including multiple starting linebackers and a defensive back, with only a handful of incoming transfers to offset it.

History says this is a mismatch on paper — an FBS program hosting an FCS opponent for a $300,000 guarantee, the kind of scheduling arrangement that keeps mid-major athletic departments afloat. The two sides have only met once before, back in 1984, when Lafayette actually won in Easton. They renewed the series in 2023 with UConn hosting, and this is the return trip under the same money-game framework — not a rivalry, just business.

The interesting wrinkle is that both programs are dealing with real questions at quarterback and on defense heading into September 5, which narrows the talent gap more than these matchups usually allow. UConn's ceiling is higher if Candle's new pieces gel fast; Lafayette's floor depends on how much its thinned-out front seven can hold up against an FBS roster that just got a serious talent injection.

Neither staff has tipped its hand on a starting lineup this early, and depth charts at both spots are still very much in flux heading into fall camp. Expect the clearer picture — who's actually starting under center for each side — to firm up as August rolls on.
