Liberty shows up looking nothing like the team that stumbled to a 4-8 finish and missed a bowl for the first time since 2019. Jamey Chadwell is back on the sideline after offseason surgery, and the Flames went shopping in the transfer portal, bringing in Wake Forest's Deshawn Purdie and West Virginia's Jaylen Henderson to compete for the starting quarterback job. Athlon Sports likes the reset enough to project Liberty back into the Conference USA title game.
James Madison's turnaround is just as dramatic, only in the opposite direction. The Dukes went 12-2, won the program's first Sun Belt title and made its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance — then watched head coach Bob Chesney bolt for UCLA and most of that CFP roster clear out, quarterback Matthew Sluka included. JMU answered by hiring Billy Napier off his Florida run and restocking with 61 newcomers, including transfer quarterbacks Davi Belfort and Arrington Maiden in an unsettled four-way battle.

This is technically new territory for a series that dates back to 1980, when JMU was still Division I-AA and Liberty was NAIA. JMU holds a 13-6 edge overall and beat Liberty 31-13 the last time these two met in September 2025, but Saturday's opener kicks off a fresh 10-game, 16-year contract between the regional rivals as full FBS peers — the inaugural Battle of the Blue Ridge.

The gap in expectations for 2026 is stark. Sun Belt coaches handed James Madison 11 of 14 first-place votes to repeat as East Division favorites, and center Zach Greenberg and defensive end Amar Thomas both landed on the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team despite the roster overhaul. Liberty's rebuild leans on skill-position additions too — receiver Makai Jackson and running back Kam Davis both rank among Conference USA's top transfer pickups — but replacing that much production at once is a lot to ask by early September.
Neither staff has to prove anything to a national audience with this one, but for both fan bases it's a real early gut check — Napier's first game running the JMU program, and Chadwell's first shot at showing last year's collapse was the outlier, not the new normal.
