Missouri State comes into Saturday, September 12 as a program mid-overhaul. Casey Woods was hired away from SMU, where he was offensive coordinator, in December to replace Ryan Beard, and he spent spring ball auditioning two transfer quarterbacks — Duke's Henry Belin IV and former UTEP starter Skyler Locklear — for the job. Nothing was settled by the end of spring, which means this non-conference date against an FCS opponent doubles as an early public evaluation of whichever passer wins the gig.
Lindenwood, meanwhile, is walking into one of the tougher Septembers in program history. The Lions finished 6-6 overall and 5-3 in OVC-Big South play in 2025, their first full season eligible for FCS postseason play after their reclassification timeline got moved up. But their non-conference slate this fall is brutal by design: a trip to Stony Brook on September 3, this game at an FBS program, then another FBS road trip to Eastern Michigan on September 26. That's two FBS dates in a 3-week stretch for a roster still built for OVC-Big South competition, not Conference USA size and speed.
The contrast in trajectories is stark. Missouri State reached a bowl game in its very first FBS season a year ago and returns more than 60 players off that Xbox Bowl roster, yet Conference USA's preseason voters still picked the Bears to finish last in the league and gave them only a 35% probability of reaching a second straight bowl — a nod to how much uncertainty a new coaching staff and an open quarterback battle can inject into a team with real returning talent.
That gap between raw returning production and preseason skepticism is exactly why this game matters more to Missouri State than the scoreboard suggests. Woods needs his new-look offense to look competent out of the gate, ideally with a clear answer at quarterback, before Conference USA play arrives. For Lindenwood, there's less to lose — a trip to Springfield is about building a program that's building itself into a legitimate FCS playoff threat, not about protecting a record against an opponent playing a different level of football.
Jed Stugart, now in his 10th season running the Lindenwood program, has the Lions further along institutionally than most FCS-to-FBS jumps would suggest — this isn't a program panicking about a mismatch, it's one using a tough schedule to measure itself. But talent and depth gaps between conference levels are real, and Missouri State's newly assembled roster, even mid-installation, has the collegiate horsepower advantage walking in.
