Louisville enters as the more proven program — a third straight 9-win season and a preseason ACC ranking well ahead of Georgia Tech's. The Cardinals' running back is the best player on the field in Isaac Brown, and that alone buys their new quarterback time to grow into the job. Georgia Tech's ceiling is real, but replacing a program-defining quarterback and offensive coordinator at once is a lot to ask in the same season.

Georgia Tech is coming off its best season since 2016, and Louisville just wrapped a third straight 9-win year under Jeff Brohm. Neither program is used to this kind of stability, which is exactly what makes the quarterback uncertainty on both sidelines the real story here — Brent Key has to replace program legend Haynes King, and Brohm is breaking in yet another new starter for the fourth year running.
Georgia Tech's QB room is led by an Indiana transfer with limited game snaps, and he's not just learning a new team — he's learning a new offense, since longtime OC Buster Faulkner left for Florida and George Godsey is installing his own scheme from scratch. Louisville's presumptive starter is an Ohio State transfer who's thrown for barely 250 yards across three college seasons. Whichever team gets steadier quarterback play first probably wins this one.

The saving grace for both offenses is that neither needs to lean on its quarterback right away. Louisville still has All-American back Isaac Brown, who flirted with the transfer portal before deciding to run it back, and Georgia Tech countered by adding Michigan transfer Justice Haynes to pair with returner Malachi Hosley. Whoever's ground game imposes itself first is going to make life a lot easier on an inexperienced passer.

Georgia Tech's defense is the bigger long-term worry. The Yellow Jackets ranked 97th nationally in pass defense last season and now have to replace departed lineman Jordan Van Den Berg up front, even as the linebacker corps — Kyle Efford and E.J. Lightsey among them — remains a legitimate strength. Louisville's issue is less about talent and more about continuity: this program simply can't stop churning through starting quarterbacks, and that instability shows up as a wildcard every time the Cardinals hit the road.

This series has been competitive but low-stakes since it began in 2018 — tied 2-2, with Louisville taking the last meeting 31-19 in Atlanta back in 2024.
