This is one of the first true measuring-stick games of the Kiffin era. LSU went 7-5 last season and fired Brian Kelly in late October after a blowout home loss to Texas A&M, then poached Kiffin off an 11-1 Ole Miss team that had just made the College Football Playoff. Kentucky is starting over too — the Wildcats finished 5-7, missed a bowl for the second straight year, and fired Mark Stoops after 13 seasons, replacing him with 36-year-old Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein. Two proud programs, two fresh starts, one October date in Lexington.
The quarterback picture is the real story here. Kiffin brought in Sam Leavitt, the headline piece of a transfer class ranked No. 1 nationally, after Leavitt threw for 4,652 yards and 36 touchdowns across two seasons at Arizona State, including a CFP berth in 2024. Leavitt missed spring reps recovering from Lisfranc surgery but has since been fully cleared and reportedly added 11 pounds heading into fall camp. Kentucky counters with Kenny Minchey, who's locked in as the unquestioned QB1 after a strong spring, even as a wide-open battle for the backup job plays out behind him.

Both staffs are still figuring out exactly who they are. LSU's roster overhaul brought in 59 newcomers, including 43 transfers and three five-stars, and Vegas has the Tigers tied for the highest win total in the SEC at 9.5 — a sign of how much talent Kiffin has stockpiled, but also how much chemistry still needs to be built. Stein, a Kentucky native who cut his teeth developing quarterbacks at Oregon, is trying to install a new system on both sides of the ball with far less portal buying power than Baton Rouge is working with.
