TLDR: Kentucky just pulled off the biggest road comeback in program history, and its reward is a visit from No. 11 LSU at Kroger Field. A week from Saturday, the Wildcats find out whether the comeback was the start of something or just a great afternoon.

No. 11 LSU (4-1) visits No. 24 Kentucky (4-1) after the Wildcats rallied from 17 down to win at South Carolina in overtime. The matchup pits Kenny Minchey and Kentucky's passing game against an LSU secondary without safety D. Spears, and a Wildcats team that keeps starting slow against a Lane Kiffin offense that has hit 35 or more 4 times. Kentucky's only loss was a home blowout to Alabama, the closest thing on its schedule to this game.

LSU Tigers
  • Offense has scored 35+ in 4 of 5 games
  • Held Texas A&M to 6; Kentucky allowed the Aggies 21
  • Defense allowed 14 or fewer in 4 of 5
  • Safety D. Spears out for season, torn ACL
  • WR P. Wright III likely out for season
  • Only road game so far was the Ole Miss loss
Kentucky Wildcats
  • Minchey: 272 yards, 3 TDs, game-winning 2-point throw
  • Won at Texas A&M 31-21
  • Rallied from 17 down; doesn't fold when trailing
  • Down 17-0 early at South Carolina
  • Lost 45-17 at home to Alabama
  • WR Miller, TE Watkins, RB Mizell all on injury report

This one is decided at quarterback and in the secondary. Kenny Minchey just threw for 272 yards and 3 touchdowns at South Carolina, then won it himself in overtime: a touchdown to Henry Boyer and the 2-point conversion to tight end Willie Rodriguez for a 35-34 win. LSU's offense, under first-year head coach Lane Kiffin, has hung 51 on Clemson, 45 on Louisiana Tech and 63 on McNeese. The Tigers' defense has held 4 of 5 opponents to 14 or fewer.

Neither team is at full strength. LSU has lost safety D. Spears to a torn ACL and receiver P. Wright III to an undisclosed injury, and both are expected to miss the rest of the season. Losing a safety is a real problem against a quarterback who just went through South Carolina's secondary for 3 scores. Kentucky has its own receiver problems. D. Miller missed the South Carolina game with a leg injury, tight end L. Watkins has been listed out with an undisclosed injury, and running back T. Mizell is projected to miss the season. Whether Miller is back for LSU is still unknown.

Both teams beat Texas A&M, which gives the closest thing to an apples-to-apples comparison. LSU beat the Aggies 35-6 at home. Kentucky won 31-21 in College Station, the better road result than anybody expected from the Wildcats. LSU's one loss came at Ole Miss, 32-24. Kentucky's came at home against Alabama, 45-17, and that blowout is the result that should worry Lexington most. The last ranked SEC team to visit Kroger Field won by 28.

Kentucky has won 3 straight, but the South Carolina win came with a warning. The Wildcats fell behind 17-0 in the second quarter before outscoring the Gamecocks 35-17 the rest of the way. You can come back from 17 down against South Carolina. Against an LSU team that has scored 35 or more in 4 of 5 games, that hole might not be climbable. LSU has won 2 straight by a combined 98-20, although one of those wins came against an FCS opponent.

The early forecast for Lexington is mild, about 75 degrees and cloudy with light wind and little chance of rain. That's a week out and will change, but for now weather isn't a factor. LSU opened as a clear road favorite on the early board. Kentucky is 2-1 in the SEC to LSU's 1-1, and the winner of this game stays in the conference conversation for another week.

What decides it is simple. If Minchey can keep a short-handed LSU secondary honest and Kentucky avoids another slow start, Kroger Field gets loud and this stays close. If LSU's offense plays like it has at home and Kentucky goes 3-and-out early again, it looks a lot like the Alabama game.
