The whole show in Baton Rouge is Sam Leavitt. Lane Kiffin handpicked him out of the portal after he threw for 4,652 yards and 36 touchdowns at Arizona State, and after a foot injury cost him spring ball, Kiffin says his QB1 is back to full strength for fall camp. McNeese counters with Jake Strong, a steady returning starter for a program that's used to playing spoiler, not favorite, on a schedule stacked with FCS playoff teams this fall.
LSU's roster overhaul goes well beyond the quarterback room. Kiffin's first fall camp at LSU has been about settling position battles as much as installing the offense, and a non-conference game like this is exactly where a new staff wants to work out the kinks before October's brutal SEC stretch against Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama and Tennessee. For McNeese, it's the reverse: a chance to bank film and confidence before Southland play heats up.
It's worth remembering McNeese isn't walking in dead on its feet.
