New Mexico State kicks off the Tony Sanchez era's third season against a team it has never even played before, and on paper this one shouldn't be close.

New Mexico State is the clear side here purely on level of competition — an FBS roster hosting a team that was picked 7th in its own FCS conference. The QB battle adds some uncertainty to how clean the Aggies look, but it shouldn't change who wins. This is a résumé game for NMSU, not a coin flip.

Mercyhurst
  • Beat Wagner and Robert Morris last season
  • Pushed eventual NEC champ to the wire
  • Picked 7th in NEC preseason poll
  • Jumping up a full level to FBS competition
New Mexico State
  • Hosting a big step-up in competition level
  • Returning linebackers Gethers and Aupiu anchor defense
  • Scored just 21.6 points per game last season
  • Tied for most turnovers in Conference USA

This is New Mexico State's first-ever meeting with Mercyhurst, a program that only recently jumped from Division II into the FCS ranks and joined the Northeast Conference. The Lakers were picked to finish 7th in the NEC's preseason poll, which tells you where they sit even within their own level, let alone against a Conference USA team. For NMSU, Saturday, September 5 is about establishing an identity early, not surviving a scare.

The bigger story in Las Cruces is the quarterback room. Furman transfer Trey Hedden, who threw for 4,734 yards and 30 touchdowns over two years at the FCS level, is battling Kalani McLeod and returner Adam Damante for the job. Damante closed last season by tossing 3 touchdowns in a win over UTEP, so he's not just handed the keys. Sanchez said after spring ball that no one had separated, which means whoever starts against Mercyhurst is stepping into a game built for confidence, not pressure.

That quarterback answer matters because NMSU's offense was broken last year. The Aggies scored just 21.6 points per game, second-lowest in Conference USA, and were tied for the most turnovers in the league with 24. A home date against an FCS team that just moved up in class is exactly the kind of game a staff needs to fix bad habits before Florida State and Hawaii show up on the schedule.

Defensively, NMSU actually has some continuity to lean on. Linebackers Tory Gethers (87 tackles, 3 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss) and Sone Aupiu (68 tackles, 4 pass breakups) both return after ranking among the team's top tacklers a season ago. Against a Mercyhurst offense that was competitive but inconsistent in NEC play last year — capable of grinding out a 16-15 win over Saint Francis one week and getting shut out 37-0 by Duquesne the next — that front seven should be able to set the tone without much resistance.

Mercyhurst isn't walking into this totally overwhelmed. The Lakers beat Wagner and Robert Morris last season and pushed Central Connecticut, the eventual NEC champ, to the final possession in a 35-28 loss. But an FCS team picked to finish mid-pack in its own conference stepping up to an FBS venue is a jump in speed and depth that shows up fast, especially up front. New Mexico State is reportedly banking a $360,000 guarantee just for hosting this one, which says plenty about how this matchup was designed from the start.
