WKU comes into this one off a 9-4 season that ended with a New Orleans Bowl win over Southern Miss, and Tyson Helton is back for year 8 running the show in Bowling Green. This is exactly the kind of game a program in that spot schedules on purpose: a chance to get reps in, avoid the injury bug, and roll into Conference USA play with momentum instead of scar tissue.
Mercyhurst is a different animal entirely. The Lakers became a full FCS member of the Northeast Conference back in 2024 and won't even be playoff-eligible until 2028 — they're still in the on-ramp phase of the transition. First-year head coach Thomas Sydeski, promoted from offensive coordinator, is taking his team on the road to WKU as the third FBS opponent in a four-week stretch, after first-ever trips to New Mexico State and New Mexico.

For WKU, the appeal here isn't drama — it's health and rhythm. A rebuilding-adjacent roster (relative to last year's bowl group) gets a low-risk week to iron out execution before the Conference USA grind, where the Hilltoppers were 6-2 a season ago.
For Mercyhurst, the value is more about experience than outcome. Getting live reps against three FBS defenses and offenses in short order — even in three straight lopsided setups — is the kind of trial-by-fire a program building toward full playoff eligibility in 2028 needs to bank now, whatever the scoreboard says on September 26.
