Mason Heintschel takes over Acrisure Stadium for a full season for the first time. He wasn't even the starter to open 2025 — he grabbed the job in Week 5 as a true freshman and went 6-3 the rest of the way, capped by a 400-yard outburst against NC State. Now he gets an entire offseason as QB1, and offensive coordinator Kade Bell has had months to build the offense around him instead of scrambling mid-season.
Miami RedHawks walk in with a very different kind of pedigree — three consecutive trips to the MAC Championship Game, most recently a 23-13 loss to Western Michigan in December. But that continuity doesn't extend to the huddle. New OC Gus Ragland has to replace both of last year's top quarterbacks, and the starting job is still being sorted out between a sophomore and two transfers as the RedHawks head into the opener.

Where Miami has an edge is up front — the offensive line returns largely intact and could be the best in the MAC, with transfer additions Rodney Nelson and Cade Yacamelli giving the run game juice regardless of who's throwing it. That's the formula for a MAC team trying to steal one off an ACC roster: control the clock, shorten the game, keep Heintschel off the field.

The Panthers lose their top two tacklers from a year ago — Rasheem Biles (101 tackles) transferred out, and Kyle Louis (81 tackles) is in the NFL now. Senior linebacker Braylan Lovelace is still around, coming off an 80-tackle season with a 100-yard pick-six against Georgia Tech, but he's suddenly the lone proven piece in that room.

This is still a résumé mismatch on paper — an 8-5 ACC team with a proven starter hosting a MAC team still figuring out its quarterback room.
