This is a Conference USA matchup between two programs headed in opposite directions. FIU just wrapped up a 7-6 season, its first winning campaign since 2018 and first bowl trip since 2019, and it earned Willie Simmons a contract extension. Middle Tennessee, meanwhile, is stuck in neutral, having gone 3-9 in back-to-back years under Derek Mason. The Blue Raiders travel to Miami on Tuesday, October 20, looking to prove last season was the floor and not the norm.
MTSU brought in a new offensive coordinator this offseason in Anthony Scelfo, along with new running backs and tight ends coaches, an overhaul aimed at fixing an offense that couldn't get out of its own way in 2025. Quarterback Roman Gagliano is back under center after Mason built spring practice around getting him more comfortable in the new system. It's a program trying to reset its identity for year 3, and road trips to a suddenly-competent CUSA foe are exactly the kind of test that either signals progress or confirms more of the same.

Appalachian State transfer JJ Kohl is the presumptive starting quarterback, and new offensive coordinator Nick Coleman is installing his system around him and running back Anthony Carrie, who ran for 469 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. The Panthers took a beating in their bowl loss to UTSA, falling 57-20, a reminder that last year's turnaround still has some rough edges that need smoothing out before this one.
