Marshall gets its home opener sandwiched right after a trip to Happy Valley, and Middle Tennessee is hoping to be the team that catches the Herd looking ahead.

Marshall brings back the more proven quarterback and a program that expects to contend in the Sun Belt, while Middle Tennessee is still digging out of consecutive 3-9 seasons. The talent and continuity gap favors the Herd clearly enough to back them outright here, even with a short week after Penn State.

Middle Tennessee
  • Cam'ron Lacy returns, preseason All-CUSA honoree
  • Gagliano gained real reps late in 2025
  • New OC Scelfo brings fresh offensive approach
  • Back-to-back 3-9 seasons under Mason
  • Projected near bottom of CUSA again
  • Road environment against a deeper roster
Marshall
  • Del Rio-Wilson back after 17 TD, 5 INT season
  • QB added 657 rush yards, 6 rushing TDs
  • Program expected back in Sun Belt title mix
  • Defense struggled in 2025, losing DB Boogie Trotter
  • Run game unproven behind two new transfers
  • Short turnaround after opening at Penn State

This is a step-down-in-competition spot on paper, but it comes loaded with context. Marshall opens 2026 at Penn State on September 5, then turns around a week later to host Middle Tennessee in what should be Tony Gibson's first home game of his second season. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is the reason the Herd are being talked about as Sun Belt contenders again — he threw 17 touchdowns against just 5 interceptions and completed 67% of his passes as a first-year starter, and he ran for 657 yards on top of it.

Middle Tennessee is coming off back-to-back 3-9 seasons and enters Derek Mason's third year still trying to find its footing. Redshirt sophomore Cam Gagliano took over the offense late in 2025 and threw for 1,005 yards down the stretch, which is why the Blue Raiders handed the play-calling to new offensive coordinator Anthony Scelfo this offseason — a bet that a scheme change unlocks more out of a group that has Cam'ron Lacy back after leading the team in receiving.

Neither program is hiding from its warts. Marshall's defense was a problem in 2025 and now has to replace defensive back Boogie Trotter, which is part of why the Herd brought in veteran coordinator Brad Lambert to clean things up. Middle Tennessee, meanwhile, is projected near the bottom of Conference USA again by most preseason outlooks, and this game lands on the road against a team with more returning firepower.

The running game is the swing factor for Marshall in this one. Antwan Roberts, last year's lead back, left for Arizona, so transfers Jamarion Wilcox (Kentucky) and Josiah McLaurin (Maryland) are being asked to replace that production immediately. If that committee is still finding its rhythm this early, Del Rio-Wilson's legs become even more important against a Middle Tennessee defense that gave up plenty during another rough season.

There's also the fatigue angle. Marshall walks into this one a week removed from a Power Four road trip, and letdown spots like this are exactly where a rebuilding team like Middle Tennessee tries to steal one. It won't be easy — the talent gap still favors the Herd — but a banged-up or distracted Marshall team gives the Blue Raiders their best kind of opening.

Lacy earning preseason All-Conference USA recognition is a small signal that Middle Tennessee isn't devoid of playmakers, even if the win total hasn't shown it. For Marshall, this is about establishing an identity at home before Sun Belt play ramps up, with a quarterback who's already shown he can carry an offense on his own.
