This is the first real look at what Matt Campbell built in State College. He walked into a program that finished 6-6 in 2025 — its worst mark since 2004 — after James Franklin was fired following an 0-3 conference collapse that started as high as No. 2 in the country. Campbell answered with a full-scale reset, including a $30 million NIL commitment and a QB swap that brought in Rocco Becht, the most experienced starter in the country with 39 career starts at Iowa State.

Minnesota, meanwhile, isn't rebuilding anything. The Gophers went 8-5 in 2025, capped it with a Rate Bowl win over New Mexico, and went a perfect 7-0 at home — their first unbeaten home slate since 1967. P.J. Fleck is still undefeated in bowl games as Minnesota's coach, and quarterback Drake Lindsey is back for year two after an encouraging redshirt-freshman season.
