Missouri looks like a team with something to play for in October. Arkansas is still figuring out who it even is.

Missouri brings back an established program with playmakers added around a proven-enough transfer quarterback, while Arkansas is still sorting out its starter under a brand-new staff. That kind of program stability is usually worth backing on the road against a team mid-rebuild, even before accounting for anything the market does with the price.

Missouri
  • 8-5 finish in 2025, coach got a new contract
  • Added Ole Miss transfer QB Austin Simmons at QB1
  • Landed receivers Cayden Lee, Caleb Goodie via portal
  • Lost significant defensive production, veteran leaders
  • Four 2025 losses came vs. eventual top-15 teams
  • Backup QB spot still unsettled behind Simmons
Arkansas
  • New coach Silverfield went 11-2 at Memphis in 2024
  • Over 40 incoming transfers signal aggressive talent push
  • Home game in Fayetteville, loud SEC crowd
  • Coming off a 2-10 season, fired coach mid-year
  • First year integrating a near-total roster overhaul
  • QB battle between Hill and a challenger still open

This one's a study in contrasts before a snap is played. Missouri enters with an 8-5 season behind it, a head coach who just got a contract extension, and a QB room led by Ole Miss transfer Austin Simmons, who won the starting job this offseason. Arkansas is doing something closer to a full reset: new coach Ryan Silverfield arrived from Memphis with his staff in tow, and the Hogs have been running a QB competition between AJ Hill and a challenger all offseason, with Hill's familiarity with Silverfield's system giving him the inside track.

The roster math tells the bigger story. Missouri's offense got two SEC-caliber additions in receivers Cayden Lee and Caleb Goodie, plus new play-callers in Chip Lindsey and Garrett Riley tasked with building around Simmons. Arkansas, meanwhile, is absorbing more than 40 incoming transfers under Silverfield — as complete an overhaul as it gets in the portal era, which means chemistry and continuity are still question marks heading into the fall.

Missouri's issue isn't talent, it's continuity on the other side of the ball — the Tigers lost significant defensive production and several veteran leaders from last year's group. Arkansas's issue is more fundamental: after firing Sam Pittman mid-season and finishing 2-10, this is Silverfield's first crack at proving the Hogs can be competitive again in a nine-game SEC slate.

Home field in Fayetteville matters in the SEC, and a late-October crowd will be loud no matter what the records say by then. But new systems on both sides of the ball for Arkansas — offense and defense integrating dozens of new faces — is the kind of thing that shows up as inconsistency more than it shows up as upset specials, especially against a team with an established starter and coordinators who already know what they're building.

Missouri's margin for error is thinner than the record suggests, given how much defensive experience is gone. But this still profiles as a program with a plan facing a program mid-teardown, and that gap tends to show up on the scoreboard more than anywhere else this early in a coaching change.
