Missouri State enters this one still figuring out who it is under Casey Woods, the former SMU offensive coordinator hired in December 2025 to run his first program. Woods inherits a roster that went 7-6 a year ago and lost a bowl game 34-28 to Arkansas State, and Saturday, November 21 lands deep into a non-conference gauntlet that already threw Texas A&M, SMU, and Marshall at the Bears this fall. That kind of schedule either toughens a team up by late November or leaves it running on fumes — this game is a decent test of which.
Jacksonville State, meanwhile, is the program with the resume. Charles Kelly's Gamecocks went 9-5 and 7-1 in CUSA a year ago, capped it with a Salute to Veterans Bowl win, and have punched their ticket to the CUSA Championship Game in each of the last two seasons. Kelly didn't sit on that success — he brought in more than 50 transfer portal additions this offseason, even after losing leading rusher Cam Cook to West Virginia and defensive lineman Emmanuel Oyebadejo to Florida. Continuity at the top matters against a team breaking in a first-time head coach.

This is also JSU's last game at home in 2026 before the Gamecocks close the year on the road at Delaware, which adds a little juice to the occasion even if the conference-standings stakes are still murky this far out. A senior-day type atmosphere against a rebuilding opponent is exactly the kind of spot veteran rosters are built to handle.

Don't sleep on Missouri State's ceiling, though. Woods ran one of the more productive offenses in the country at SMU, and if any of that system translates quickly, the Bears have shown they can hang with quality competition — 5-3 in CUSA last year was good for a share of 4th place, not a pushover mark. The question in year one of a coaching change is always consistency, and that's the exact question a road trip to a bowl-tested program in November tends to answer.
Jacksonville State's portal turnover cuts both ways too. Fifty-plus new pieces means talent, but it also means chemistry questions that sometimes don't fully resolve until conference play is already half over. If the Gamecocks are still knitting things together on defense, Missouri State's staff — fresh off building offenses at the FBS level — could find some soft spots.
Bottom line: JSU brings the pedigree, the home crowd, and the recent CUSA championship pedigree into this one. Missouri State brings uncertainty, but also a coach with a track record of making offenses go. That tension is the whole ballgame here.
