NC State brings a returning starting quarterback and a four-game winning streak in this series into a building on shaky ground. Florida State is breaking in a new signal-caller and a coach fighting to save his job, which is a tough combination against a team that just won a bowl game.

NC State
  • CJ Bailey returns after breakout junior season
  • Won Gasparilla Bowl, first bowl win since 2017
  • Won last 4 meetings vs Florida State
  • Allowed 31.4 ppg to ACC teams in 2025
  • Lost starting LT Jacarrius Peak to the portal
Florida State
  • No. 14 recruiting class nationally, Norvell's 2nd-best haul
  • Fresh start at QB with Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels
  • Norvell on the hot seat after back-to-back losing ACC marks
  • Missed a bowl game in 2025 at 5-7
  • Heavy roster turnover, 68 outgoing transfers

This is a Friday-night ACC clash that means very different things to each locker room. NC State comes off a bowl-winning season with real momentum. Florida State comes off back-to-back losing conference records and a head coach who's been publicly defending his seat all offseason.

CJ Bailey is back under center for the Wolfpack after a breakout junior campaign, giving Dave Doeren's offense a proven piece to build around heading into year 14 of his tenure. Florida State, meanwhile, hands the keys to Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels, who beat out camp competition this spring to win the job — a fresh start at the position after two rough years in Tallahassee.

Mike Norvell isn't going anywhere in 2026, but the margin for error is thin. Florida State missed a bowl game last season at 5-7, and a program that was 13-0 just two years ago now has to prove that wasn't a mirage. The Seminoles' 2026 recruiting class checked in at No. 14 nationally, a genuine building block, but a brutal non-conference slate including a trip to Alabama isn't doing Norvell any favors.

NC State isn't without its own questions. The Wolfpack defense got carved up in ACC play last year, allowing 31.4 points a game against conference opponents, and they lost starting left tackle Jacarrius Peak to South Carolina in the portal. Still, this is a program that just won its first bowl game since 2017 and has beaten Florida State four straight times, including last season's meeting. That kind of recent history matters when one team is playing loose and the other is playing scared.

The transfer portal tells a similar story about direction. NC State brought in help at tackle, receiver and linebacker while staying largely intact on offense. Florida State churned through nearly 70 outgoing transfers and 24 incoming, adding pieces like running back Tre Wisner out of Texas — a sign of a roster still being rebuilt on the fly rather than one hitting its stride.

This series has flipped from a Florida State stronghold to genuinely competitive over the last two decades, and right now the Wolfpack are the ones with the swagger. A fifth straight win over the Seminoles would be a big statement — and would turn up the volume on every hot-seat conversation happening in Tallahassee.
