TLDR: UCLA is 7-0, ranked No. 9 and running on its backup quarterback. Nevada comes to the Rose Bowl on Saturday, October 31, at 2-4, and the only question that matters is whether the Bruins treat it like a game or a scrimmage.

No. 9 UCLA, 7-0 behind backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach since Nico Iamaleava's season-ending knee injury, hosts a 2-4 Nevada team that is 1-4 in its last 5. The game comes down to whether Nevada's leaky defense can slow the Big Ten's top rushing attack, and whether the Wolf Pack can stop giving away points on special teams and failed trick plays. No board has been posted yet.

Nevada Wolf Pack
  • Put up 33 on Air Force, offense can score
  • Led North Dakota State 11-0 early on the road
  • Bianco-to-Givens connection produced a TD vs NDSU
  • 1-4 in the last 5, lost at home to Montana State
  • Gave up 36 to Air Force, 31 to NDSU
  • Gave away points on a FG return and a fumbled 2-point try
UCLA Bruins
  • Led the Big Ten at 231 rushing yards per game
  • Dieffenbach 2-0 as a starter, threw for 264 in his debut
  • Defense held Wisconsin to 7, Michigan State to 10

The football story is the quarterback. Nico Iamaleava hurt his left leg scrambling in the 17-15 upset at Oregon, needed knee surgery and is done for the year. Ty Dieffenbach, a 6-foot-6 senior, took over and went 22-of-33 for 264 yards in his first FBS start, a 17-7 win over Wisconsin. He followed that with a 28-10 win over Michigan State. That makes 2 starts and 2 wins, and Nevada will be his 3rd look as the starter.

Dieffenbach doesn't have to win this one by himself. Going into the Michigan State game, UCLA led the Big Ten at 231.0 rushing yards per game and 21 rushing touchdowns, so the offense is built to lean on the ground. The Bruins will do that without OG J. Davis, who is listed out with an undisclosed injury, and the passing game has been missing WR M. Matthews since September. CB R. Pleasant is also listed out on defense. That's a thinner roster than the record suggests, but none of it showed up in the scores of the last 2 weeks.

Nevada has nothing like that going for it. The Wolf Pack are 1-4 in their last 5. They lost at home to Montana State, dropped a 3-point shootout to Air Force and beat UTEP for their only win in that stretch. The 31-17 loss to North Dakota State shows how these games keep getting away from them: Nevada led 11-0 early in the 2nd quarter, gave up a 100-yard missed field-goal return for a touchdown, and then fumbled a trick-play 2-point try that the Bison ran back for 2 points of their own.

There is some offense in Reno. AJ Bianco hit Gary Givens III for a 19-yard touchdown that got Nevada within 19-17 against North Dakota State, and the Pack put up 33 on Air Force. The defense is the problem. It gave up 36 to Air Force's option and 31 to the Bison, which is a rough résumé to bring against the best rushing attack in the Big Ten. If Nevada can't get stops on early downs, UCLA will just keep running and Dieffenbach won't have to do much.

The early forecast for Pasadena says 60 degrees with light drizzle and not much wind. That's 7 days out, so don't count on it. The Rose Bowl crowd is worth watching too: UCLA averaged only 32,978 through its first 3 home games and has started offering free student admission and buses from campus. Chesney took over a 3-9 program and has it unbeaten in Big Ten play. A 2-4 non-conference visitor in Week 10 is mostly a chance to get Dieffenbach more reps and keep everyone healthy.
