TLDR: Two Mountain West teams that have lost 3 straight meet Saturday, October 10, in El Paso. One of them leaves with its first conference win, and Nevada comes in with the extra week of rest.

Nevada (1-3) comes off a bye after a 36-33 double-overtime loss to Air Force, in which Herschel Turner ran for 111 yards and the Wolf Pack didn't turn it over. UTEP (1-4) has scored 7 points in each of its last 2 home and road losses, including a 61-7 Mountain West debut at New Mexico. The Miners are also without receivers C. Simon and M. Ferguson. The game likely comes down to whether UTEP's thin passing game can keep Nevada's run defense from loading up on Raymond Moore III, and no betting board has been posted yet.

Nevada Wolf Pack
  • Turner averaged 10.1 yards per carry against Air Force
  • Zero turnovers in the Air Force loss
  • Extra week of rest coming off a bye
  • Lost 3 straight, including at home to FCS Montana State
  • Gave up a 10-point lead's worth of ground, then lost in 2OT
  • Defense on the field long enough for 2 linebackers to combine for 39 tackles
UTEP Miners
  • Moore's legs produced an 86-yard touchdown run
  • Home game at the Sun Bowl after 2 road losses

Start with the quarterbacks, because the two offenses haven't looked like the same sport lately. Carter Jones ran a steady Nevada offense against Air Force: 18-of-30 for 224 yards, no picks, and 9 different players with a catch. UTEP's Raymond Moore III had one great play at New Mexico, an 86-yard keeper for the Miners' only points. He also threw an interception that Austin Brawley returned 65 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter. Most of that afternoon looked like the interception, not the run.

Nevada's loss to Air Force went 2 overtimes and ended 36-33 on a 7-yard Rocco Conti run. The Wolf Pack came back from 10 points down to force overtime, and Herschel Turner tied it with a 57-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left. Turner finished with 111 yards on 11 carries, and Nevada ran for 187 as a team without turning it over. On defense, EJ Smith made 21 tackles and Dylan LaBarbera made 18, which says plenty about how long Air Force kept the ball. Nevada was off this week, so it has had 2 weeks to get over that loss.

UTEP's week went much worse. The Miners' first Mountain West game ended 61-7 at New Mexico, down 21-0 at the half and 37-0 after a blocked punt for a safety. Over the last 3 games UTEP has scored 7, 17 and 7. Its only win came against Texas Southern, an FCS team. Now the Miners have to fix that without 2 receivers.

Nevada isn't on a roll either. The 49-14 win over Western Kentucky in the opener looks like the outlier now, after a 7-20 home loss to FCS Montana State, a one-score loss at Middle Tennessee and the overtime loss to Air Force. The good news is that the last 2 losses were by a combined 10 points. The Wolf Pack has kept games close and then lost them, which isn't the same as getting blown out every week, and that's what UTEP has been doing.

UTEP's receivers are a real concern. C. Simon and M. Ferguson are both listed out with undisclosed injuries and no timetable to return. An offense that has scored 14 points in its last 2 games is now short on targets. If Moore can't stretch the field, Nevada's linebackers can stay near the line of scrimmage and play the run, and Smith and LaBarbera have been piling up tackles there.

The forecast in El Paso is 79 degrees and mostly sunny with almost no wind, so weather won't be an excuse for either team. UTEP gets a home crowd and a chance to show the New Mexico game was a one-off. Nevada gets a road game against a team that has been outscored 146-31 in its 4 losses. That gives the Wolf Pack a real shot at breaking its own losing streak. Whichever team loses heads into the middle of October still looking for its first conference win.
