John Mateer is back under center for Oklahoma, and that alone changes the ceiling for this offense. He battled through a thumb injury for most of last season but still helped the Sooners reach the CFP, and Brent Venables has spent the offseason working with him directly on reading defenses and speeding up his decision-making. New Mexico brings its own returning starter in Jack Layne, though his spring was limited, and Jason Eck's staff loaded up the quarterback room with a waiver case in James Laubstein and an Oregon transfer in Luke Moga just in case.
The defensive gap is the bigger story here. Venables took over as Oklahoma's defensive play-caller in 2025 and the results were absurd — sixth nationally in yards allowed, seventh in points allowed, and the nation's best team in both tackles for loss and sacks per game. New Mexico's offense has to figure out its quarterback pecking order against a defense that treats explosive plays like a personal insult.

None of that erases what the Lobos built in 2025. Eck's first year in Albuquerque produced a 9-4 record and bowl eligibility for the first time in nearly a decade, and that program isn't walking into Norman on Saturday, September 19 planning to just take the paycheck.

New Mexico's floor is legitimate — a Mountain West team that went 6-2 in league play and beat UNLV to punch its bowl ticket isn't a pushover script. But asking a rebuilt quarterback room to go on the road against the sixth-best defense in the country, in just the third or fourth week of the season, is a lot to ask. The tape here should tell Sooners fans plenty about where this defense stands heading into October.
