Norfolk State closes out a brutal two-week road trip through FBS country with a trip to Scott Stadium, and it's hard to find a scarier spot for a team still finding itself under Michael Vick.

Virginia is the far more talented team on both sides of the ball, coming off an 11-win season with 15 starters back, against an FCS program that went 1-11 a year ago. There's no realistic path to value on Norfolk State here — this is a chalk moneyline play, and the only question is by how much.
Norfolk State
+Michael Vick's culture reset entering year 2
+Motivated by two straight FBS road tests
−Went 1-11 in Vick's debut season
−Quarterback room in flux after Carter's transfer
Virginia
+11 wins, ACC title game trip last season
+15 returning starters, deep o-line and RB room
−Chandler Morris gone, new starter unproven
−Could look ahead with a soft nonconference slate
Virginia's quarterback room looks a lot different than the one that helped the Cavaliers win 11 games a year ago. Chandler Morris is gone after the NCAA denied him another year, and the Cavaliers spent the offseason retooling behind him, so whoever is under center on Friday, September 11 will be doing it without the guy who steered last year's ACC Championship Game run. Norfolk State, meanwhile, is still sorting out its own quarterback situation after Israel Carter left via the portal, leaving Vick to lean on a mix of newcomers as his program tries to shake off a 1-11 debut season.
This is the second half of a gauntlet for the Spartans, who play at Old Dominion before turning around and heading to Charlottesville — back-to-back trips to FBS venues to open Vick's second season. That's a tall order for a roster still figuring out its identity, especially with the passing game in flux. Virginia doesn't have that problem: the Cavaliers return 15 starters off last year's breakthrough, including a veteran offensive line that should make life easier on whoever wins the quarterback job.

The gap on paper is enormous, and it's the kind of game where Virginia's continuity — an experienced line, a defense that returns 8 starters off a unit allowing 19 points a game — should show up early. For Norfolk State, the value in a trip like this isn't the scoreboard; it's reps, and a shot to see which of Vick's new pieces can hold up against a Power 4 front.

Virginia's 2025 turnaround wasn't a fluke buildup — the Cavaliers went from afterthought to ACC title game participant and capped it with a Gator Bowl win over Missouri, the program's first bowl victory since 2018. Tony Elliott enters year 5 with a roster that finally looks like his, and games like this one exist to let the new pieces — including a crowded running back room after portal additions Jekail Middlebrook, Peyton Lewis, and Solomon Beebe — get up to speed before ACC play gets serious.

For Vick, this is about establishing standards more than chasing an upset. The Hampton rivalry game looms the following week, and how Norfolk State's new-look offense responds to a physical, talented Virginia front will say a lot about where this rebuild actually stands heading into MEAC play.
