Ryan Silverfield takes his first snap as Arkansas's head coach on Saturday, September 5, and he still doesn't know who's taking the Razorbacks' first snap. KJ Jackson and AJ Hill have been grinding through a genuine quarterback battle all offseason, and Silverfield has said there won't be a definitive answer until mid-to-late August, giving whoever wins it only a couple of weeks with the new-look receiving corps and a rebuilt offensive line before kickoff.
Whichever quarterback gets the nod, the guy under center is inheriting a program in full teardown mode. Arkansas fired Sam Pittman after a 2-3 start last year that included a loss to Memphis, of all teams, then stumbled through seven straight losses under interim coach Bobby Petrino to finish 2-10, the Hogs' worst finish since 2019. The fix was hiring the Memphis coach himself: Silverfield went 50-24 with the Tigers, including an AP Top 25 finish in 2024, and Arkansas is bringing in more than 40 transfers to speed up the rebuild.

North Alabama isn't walking into a good spot to catch a program mid-overhaul. The Lions finished 2-10 themselves last year under third-year coach Brent Dearmon, going winless on the road at 0-7, and now they're opening the season on the road against an SEC roster that's been stocked with new talent all winter.
