Georgia State is coming off a brutal 1-11 season, but this is still an FBS roster hosting an FCS opponent that's overhauling both lines from scratch. The Panthers' talent and depth advantage should be enough to get a win here even with a shaky defense and a new coordinator still installing his scheme.

This one's less about who's good and more about who's less broken. Shawn Gibbs enters Year 2 at NC A&T after a 2-10, 2-6 CAA debut, and the fix-it plan is obvious: an offseason haul of 38 newcomers, 17 of them transfers, aimed almost entirely at the lines of scrimmage. Guys like Elon's Ahmarion McLeod, South Carolina State's Eli Williams and Coastal Carolina's Desmond Jackson are there to stop the Aggies from getting physically overwhelmed the way they were a year ago. The other headline out of Greensboro is a genuinely open quarterback competition, with Jy Walls, Long, Kevin White and Alston Hooker all getting real reps this spring.
Georgia State's offseason reads even more urgent. Dell McGee's Panthers didn't just miss in Year 2, they collapsed, going 1-11 with an 0-8 mark in the Sun Belt East and dropping their final nine games by double digits. McGee moved on from defensive coordinator Travis Pearson and special teams coordinator Carter Blount after a unit that surrendered 37.8 points a game, replacing Pearson with a coordinator pulled out of the FCS ranks. On the roster side, transfers Keith Adams Jr. (Clemson) and Jaylen Poe (NIU) arrive to beef up a backfield that also gets a healthy Ladainnian Martin back after he battled an undisclosed injury as a freshman.

Neither program is walking into this one with much national attention, and the early market reflects it — nobody's rushed to hang a number on a game between a 1-11 FBS team and a 2-10 FCS team seven weeks out. That's fine. The story here isn't the price, it's whether either staff can show real progress in a season-opening buy game before conference play gets ugly again.
For NC A&T, the schedule itself is a small mercy — for the first time since 2023, the Aggies won't face a Power Four opponent, and this trip to Atlanta is the biggest early measuring stick they'll get against an FBS roster. Winning it, or even hanging around, would be a real signal after the roster overhaul. Georgia State's issue is more existential: an offense that scored under 20 points a game last season lost its top receiver, Ted Hurst, to the NFL Draft, and the same group that couldn't stop anybody in September now has to prove the new-look defense is actually different, not just newly hired.

Both sides will point to their portal classes as evidence things are turning, and both are right that the rosters look different than the ones that lost nine and ten games. Whether that shows up on the scoreboard in Week 0 is another matter — new offensive linemen and a first-year defensive coordinator installing a scheme in a matter of weeks is a lot to ask against a live opponent, FCS or not.

This is a season-opener for two staffs that need one, not a marquee matchup, but it's worth watching for exactly that reason: it'll be the first real evidence of whether either rebuild is actually working.
