NC A&T arrived with its own overhaul story, just a tier down. Shawn Gibbs, in his 2nd season, rebuilt the Aggies at nearly every position and had been talking up a return to a 'championship identity' after A&T went 2-10 in 2025 and sits 4-31 in CAA play since joining the league in 2023. On paper this was a step-up game for a program still hunting its footing; in practice, it was a gap Georgia State's transfer portal spending was built to expose.
The heat didn't help matters for the smaller program, either — first pitch weather sat at 96 degrees and partly sunny at Center Parc Stadium, the kind of afternoon that tends to wear down the shallower roster. Sharp money had leaned hard toward a low-scoring afternoon before kickoff, but this one never found that gear.
Brown finished with 2 touchdown passes on 15-of-20 throwing for 190 yards, and Georgia State layered 6 rushing touchdowns on top of it for 563 yards of total offense. The Panthers led 35-7 at halftime and simply kept adding, scoring 24 more in the 3rd quarter alone before easing off. NC A&T's only sustained answer came late, a field goal in the 4th its lone points after the break.
For Georgia State, it's the kind of statement opener a program picked 7th in the Sun Belt East wanted after back-to-back losing seasons. For NC A&T, it's a reminder that Gibbs' rebuild is still very much under construction against anyone above its own level — the Aggies' actual test starts once CAA play resumes.
