Bill Belichick's college coaching career started with a 48-14 face-plant against TCU. The rematch happens an ocean away in Dublin, and this time there's nowhere to hide.

TCU is the more stable program walking into this one — a 9-4 season, an Alamo Bowl win, and a coaching staff that isn't rebuilding on the fly. North Carolina is still sorting out its starting quarterback in fall camp, and last year's 34-point beatdown at these same hands is the freshest data point anyone has. Back the Horned Frogs to win this one outright.

North Carolina
  • Steve Belichick's defense returns largely intact
  • grad transfer Edwards brings actual starting experience
  • nothing to lose after a 4-8 debut season
  • offense ranked 16th of 17 ACC teams in scoring in 2025
  • QB competition still unresolved deep into camp
  • lost to this same TCU team 48-14 a year ago
TCU
  • went 9-4 and won the Alamo Bowl over USC in 2025
  • closed last season ranked 25th in the final AP poll
  • Dykes brings coaching continuity UNC can't match
  • losing three-year starter Josh Hoover to the portal (Indiana)
  • replacing him with Harvard transfer Craig, unproven vs. major-conference defenses
  • first real road test of the year comes on a different continent

Last August, in Belichick's very first game as a college coach, TCU throttled North Carolina 48-14 right out of the gate. A year later the rematch is happening at Aviva Stadium in Dublin as part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic — the first time in program history UNC has played a game outside the United States. Belichick, who's already fielded plenty of public skepticism after a rough debut season, doesn't get a soft entry point for year 2.

Both sides show up to Ireland breaking in new starting quarterbacks. TCU is moving on from Josh Hoover, who transferred to Indiana after the Alamo Bowl, and Harvard grad transfer Jaden Craig looks like the next man up after setting Harvard's single-season records for completions, touchdown passes and passing yards in 2025. UNC's new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, hired this offseason to fix an attack that ranked 16th out of 17 teams in the ACC in scoring, appears to be settling on Wisconsin/Maryland transfer Billy Edwards Jr. as his game-managing answer. Neither staff has had a real game to see how any of it clicks yet.

What UNC didn't blow up this offseason is the defense — Steve Belichick stays on as coordinator, giving the Tar Heels at least one unit with continuity heading into a stretch that also includes a trip to Clemson and a home date with Notre Dame. TCU, meanwhile, looks like the more settled program walking into Dublin: Sonny Dykes led the Horned Frogs to a 9-4 finish and an Alamo Bowl win over USC, closing last season ranked 25th in the final AP poll.

History says surprisingly little about this series — North Carolina had won all three prior meetings before last year's 48-14 wake-up call flipped the script entirely. Whatever happens on Saturday, August 29 gets viewed through a magnified lens: a coaching legend trying to prove year 1 was a fluke, and a Big 12 program trying to show last season's bowl win wasn't a mirage behind a brand-new quarterback.

Neither roster is fully settled with fall camp still playing out, so expect both staffs to lean on whatever they trust most early — running the ball, playing clean complementary defense, and not turning it over in a game that already carries plenty of intrigue before a snap is even taken.
