Two programs headed in very different recent directions but sharing the same uncertainty this fall collide as North Carolina heads north to test whether UConn's surprise breakout was real or a one-coach fluke.

UConn takes a real recent-history edge into this one — back-to-back nine-win seasons and a perfect home mark last year — even with a first-year coach in Jason Candle. North Carolina is still trying to find a quarterback and is coming off a 4-8 season with well-documented locker room issues, which makes backing the Huskies at home the safer moneyline lean.

North Carolina
  • Belichick says culture is 'night and day' better
  • Overhauled QB room with portal additions plus a recruit
  • Went 4-8 with five losses by 16+ points in 2025
  • QB competition still wide open entering August camp
  • 2025 wins came against teams that went 8-28 combined
UConn
  • Went 9-3 with first-ever back-to-back nine-win seasons
  • Perfect 6-0 at home in 2025, first since 2010
  • Kenji Christian gives a proven run-game piece already
  • Brand-new head coach Jason Candle making his debut
  • Losing top target Skyler Bell (101 catches) from 2025
  • Own QB battle unresolved between Osborne and Merklinger

Both sidelines are answering the same question this preseason: who's playing quarterback? UNC enters Bill Belichick's second camp with a four-man derby among Billy Edwards Jr., Miles O'Neill, Travis Burgess and Au'Tori Newkirk after Gio Lopez managed just 10 touchdowns across 11 starts in 2025. Belichick's response when asked to pick a leader was blunt: all four guys have strong points, and that's basically code for nobody's separated yet.

UConn's answer is just as unsettled. First-year head coach Jason Candle, hired away from Toledo to replace Jim Mora, is sorting out Kalieb Osborne against Jake Merklinger under center while also replacing his top target — Skyler Bell caught 101 passes last season and is gone. Emanuel Ross arrives from Syracuse to help fill that void, and Kenji Christian, who ran for 528 yards and four scores at Toledo, gives Candle a proven early-down option while everything else gets sorted out.

The gap in recent results is stark even if the outside projections aren't kind to either program right now. Mora left UConn on an actual high — 9-3, a perfect 6-0 at home, and the program's first AP poll votes since 2010 — while Belichick's debut in Chapel Hill produced a 4-8 season with five losses by 16-plus points and reported locker-room turmoil. That history gap is part of why the market treats this one as a coin flip early: new coach, new quarterback, new question marks on both sides.

Belichick has been telling anyone who'll listen that the program feels different this time around, insisting the culture and talent level are night-and-day from a year ago. That's the kind of thing every first-year coach says in July, but it's also worth remembering UNC's three wins last season came against teams that combined to go 8-28 — the margin for real improvement here is not small.

UConn's pitch is simpler: keep doing what worked. Candle inherits a roster that just posted back-to-back nine-win seasons for the first time in program history, and even without Mora or Bell, there's more established depth walking into this one than North Carolina can currently claim. Whichever quarterback rooms settle first by November may end up deciding this game as much as anything else on the roster.
