East Carolina (1-2) hosts FCS North Carolina Central (2-2) in an in-state non-conference game at Dowdy-Ficklen. The Pirates are huge favorites. The open question is whether an ECU offense that hasn't scored more than 24 points yet can run away from an Eagles defense that allowed 42 and 44 in its 2 road games.

ECU's September has been rough. The Pirates opened by losing 48-10 at Alabama, then dropped the home opener 27-24 to Appalachian State, and only got into the win column with a 20-17 grinder at Old Dominion. That puts them at 1-2 as of this week, and in 3 games they've scored 10, 24 and 20. Against a Power 4 defense, then 2 Sun Belt defenses, that's an offense that hasn't blown anybody away yet.

NC Central shows up at 2-2 with 2 very different teams depending on where they play. In Durham the Eagles are 2-0, with a 27-6 win over Elizabeth City State and a 30-22 win over North Carolina A&T in the Eagle-Aggie Classic. On the road they're 0-2, and the defense has leaked badly: 42 allowed at Texas Southern to open the year and 44 allowed at Gardner-Webb last time out. Greenville is their third road trip, and by a wide margin the biggest stage.

Everything about the board says blowout, and that's the only real question here. Nobody expects NC Central to win this. The interesting part is whether an ECU offense that has topped out at 24 points can get the separation a game like this is supposed to produce, or whether the Pirates grind out another low-scoring afternoon.

Trei Oliver's Eagles do know how to score. They put up 30 in each of their 2 home wins and still got 30 on the board in the loss at Texas Southern. Their problem is that the defense gives up points in bunches away from home, and ECU at home is a serious step up from Gardner-Webb. If the Eagles get 2 or 3 scores off the Pirates' backups late, it keeps this from being a total embarrassment.

For ECU this is about building rhythm before the schedule gets tougher. They won at ODU without looking dominant, and a comfortable home win with the starters out early would do more for this group than another 3-point escape. The forecast is no excuse either: clear skies, mid-70s and a light wind in Greenville on Saturday, September 26.

The Pirates should win this, and the Eagles should get a check and some film. What's worth watching is whether ECU's offense finally shows it can pull away from somebody, because it hasn't had to do that yet this season.
