This is Week 3 of the Matt Rhule era's next chapter, and it's the first real gut-check before Nebraska hits Michigan State and the rest of the Big Ten slate. North Dakota comes to Lincoln at 6:15 PM ET off a 2025 season where the Fighting Hawks lost five games by a combined 17 points — the kind of record that says this roster was one bounce away from something bigger, not a program that backed into the playoff bracket.
The story in Lincoln is quarterback Anthony Colandrea, the UNLV transfer and reigning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year now running Dana Holgorsen's offense. His mobility is supposed to fix an attack that managed only 370 yards and 28.7 points a game a year ago, and he's got a proven set of hands to throw to in Nyziah Hunter and Jacory Barney Jr. North Dakota counters with its own dual-threat problem in Jerry Kaminski, who put up 2,570 passing yards and 607 rushing yards last season — this is as live an arm as Nebraska will see from an FCS opponent all year.

Fall camp wasn't clean for Nebraska. Corner Blye Hill re-injured his patella and inside linebacker Gage Stenger — described as the heartbeat of the defense — went down, both season-ending knee injuries that thin out two spots the Huskers can't really afford to thin out against a North Dakota offense built to attack space. North Dakota isn't walking in overmatched on paper, either. The Fighting Hawks' defense allowed just 309.9 yards a game last season, a number that would rank inside the top 25 nationally at the FBS level, and it's anchored by preseason All-American edge rusher Lance Rucker, who led the MVFC with 11.5 sacks. The catch: North Dakota lost its leading rusher and top receiver to the transfer portal, and the defense has to replace its top two tacklers — so the Fighting Hawks are counting on continuity up front to cover for real turnover elsewhere.
Nebraska's path to 5-0 runs through games like this one before the schedule turns brutal, and Rhule — sitting at 19-19 in Lincoln with a long-term contract and a fanbase running out of patience — needs this to look like a statement, not a survival act. A sloppy showing against an FCS team missing key pieces would say a lot more about where this program actually is than another offseason quote sheet ever could.
