Dan Mullen's rebuild is ahead of schedule, and Jackson Arnold is supposed to be the proof of concept. The former five-star recruit bounced through Oklahoma and Auburn without ever fully sticking, but he landed in Las Vegas as a Preseason All-Mountain West second-teamer and the clear centerpiece of Mullen's offense. Northern Illinois is living out a very different kind of season on the other sideline — its first in the Mountain West after years in the MAC, and its first without Thomas Hammock, who left for an NFL running backs job back in February. Interim coach Rob Harley, promoted straight from defensive coordinator, is the one trying to hold it all together.

That coaching gap is the story here. Harley inherited a program with real recent pedigree — this is still the fan base that watched Hammock's group knock off Notre Dame outright in 2024 — but doing it with an interim staff, in a brand-new league, on the road in Las Vegas is a tall ask. UNLV, meanwhile, gets to make its own transition look easy: the Mountain West lost Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State to the Pac-12 this offseason, clearing a runway for the Rebels that simply didn't exist a year ago.

Arnold's tape at his first two stops was uneven at best — he was benched in late October last season in favor of Ashton Daniels at Auburn — but Mullen has built a track record of squeezing more out of transfer quarterbacks than their old programs ever did. If that pattern holds here, UNLV's offense should have answers a rebuilding Huskies defense hasn't seen yet against Mountain West competition.
