Two teams that combined to go 7-17 last season meet in the new-look Mountain West, and neither wants to spend October answering for why it's still stuck at the bottom.

Wyoming's staff continuity gives it the edge in a game between two teams that combined for a 7-17 record a season ago. Northern Illinois is breaking in an interim coach and settling a quarterback battle in real time, which is a rough spot to be in on the road in October. Back the Cowboys to win outright as the steadier of two shaky programs.

Northern Illinois
  • DaAree Rogers returns after leading team with 46 catches
  • Telly Johnson Jr. back at running back
  • Portal additions Lindo and Falke bolster secondary
  • Finished 3-9 with 2-6 mark in MAC in 2025
  • Lost 34 players to the portal
  • Interim coach Rob Harley replacing Thomas Hammock
Wyoming
  • Jay Sawvel enters year 3 with continuity
  • 28 returning lettermen plus 20 transfers added
  • Non-conference schedule eased with no Power 4 games
  • Finished 4-8 and 2-6 in Mountain West in 2025
  • Ongoing losing trend under Sawvel
  • Still integrating 20 new transfers into the roster

Northern Illinois shows up without a settled answer at quarterback. Josh Holst, who started most of 2025, hit the transfer portal after the Huskies scored their fewest points in a season since 1998, and interim head coach Rob Harley — promoted after Thomas Hammock left for a Seahawks assistant job — is sorting out a QB battle on the fly while learning a new conference. That's a lot of moving parts for a road trip to Laramie.

Wyoming isn't exactly a picture of stability either, but at least Jay Sawvel is entering year 3 with the same voice in the building. The Cowboys added 20 transfers over the winter — 8 on offense, 11 on defense — on top of 28 returning lettermen, and Sawvel's staff has had a full offseason to get everybody in the building instead of scrambling in September. That continuity matters against a Huskies team still figuring out who lines up under center.

Neither program walks in with much margin for error. Wyoming went 4-8 and 2-6 in league play a year ago, and an easier-looking non-conference slate — no Colorado, no Utah this time around — doesn't erase that the Cowboys still have to actually win Mountain West games. Northern Illinois, for its part, is trying to be competitive in year one of a new league with 34 fewer players on the roster than it had a season ago.

NIU does have a couple of building blocks. DaAree Rogers is back after leading the Huskies with 46 catches, and Telly Johnson Jr. returns at running back, giving Harley's staff a pair of returning playmakers instead of a total teardown. The defense also got a portal boost at corner, with Liam Lindo and Yassine Falke joining sophomore Dev'ion Reynolds in what's shaping up as the roster's strongest unit.

Wyoming's calling card the last couple years has been physicality — run the ball, lean on defense, don't beat yourself. That style plays fine at home, where the thin air in Laramie has been a genuine equalizer for visiting offenses trying to find a rhythm. For a Huskies team still installing a new coordinator setup and breaking in a quarterback, that's not a small hurdle.

This one is really about which rebuild is further along. Wyoming has more roster continuity and a coach who isn't new to the job; Northern Illinois has more raw questions to answer in a tougher league than the one it just left. Neither side looks like a finished product, but only one of them is figuring it out at altitude.
