Indiana enters this one 2-0 and sitting at No. 4 in both the AP and Coaches polls, the kind of ranking that comes with a target on it the moment Big Ten play starts getting real. Northwestern isn't walking into Memorial Stadium as a pushover, either — the Wildcats are also 2-0, though their path there has drawn a fraction of the attention Indiana's has.

The Wildcats' start has actually been loud in its own building. Northwestern opened with a 34-18 win over South Dakota State, then blew out Colorado 41-7 in the program's lakefront finale at Martin Stadium, with head coach David Braun still calling the group "far from a finished product" even after that kind of scoreline. That's a team scoring points in bunches against overmatched competition — the question Friday is whether any of it translates against a defense that's actually supposed to be good.

That's the crux of the matchup: Indiana's ranking is built on two wins nobody's fully stress-tested yet, and Northwestern's offense has looked live but hasn't seen anything close to a No. 4 team's front seven. The number in Vegas already reflects a gap most books think is enormous, and Friday's the first real chance to find out if that gap is as wide as advertised or if it's still mostly reputation.
