This one comes stacked with reunions: Pat Fitzgerald coaching against the program he built for 18 seasons, and Aidan Chiles lining up against the team that let him walk.

Northwestern enters this one with a real record advantage and a quarterback who's flashed real big-play ability, even if his decision-making still needs polish. Michigan State is starting over at coordinator, quarterback, and roughly half its roster all at once. Take the team with fewer moving parts here.

Northwestern
  • Went 7-6 with a sixth straight bowl win in 2025
  • Added Chiles, a proven dual-threat weapon at QB
  • Braun enters Year 4 with real program continuity
  • Chiles' decision-making has been inconsistent at times
  • Backup Marchiol is also a new portal addition
  • Walking into an emotional revenge spot for Fitzgerald
Michigan State
  • Fitzgerald has a track record, 110 wins built at Northwestern
  • Massive portal haul brings a fresh talent infusion
  • Playing at home in Fitzgerald's debut season
  • Went 4-8 in 2025, longest losing streak in program history
  • 45 players out, 32 in — chemistry still forming
  • QB competition between Milivojevic and Fancher unresolved

Northwestern is expected to hand the offense to Chiles, the dual-threat quarterback who spent his college career at Michigan State before transferring to Evanston this offseason. Across the field, MSU is banking on Alessio Milivojevic, the redshirt sophomore who took over the final four games of 2025, though UCF transfer Cam Fancher is in the mix to push him. It's a quarterback battle wrapped in irony — the guy Michigan State let go against the guy Michigan State is hoping can be the answer.

Michigan State overhauled almost half its roster this offseason, with 45 players out and 32 new arrivals in, so whatever chemistry exists by October 16 will still be fresh. Northwestern, by contrast, returns a program that's won six straight bowl games and enters Year 4 under David Braun with real continuity. That gap in stability shapes how this whole matchup should be read before a single line is set.

Fitzgerald's history in Evanston complicates things further. He won 110 games there over 18 seasons before being fired amid a hazing scandal that still hangs over both fan bases. Whatever gets said in pregame handshakes, this is shaping up as a loaded homecoming for everybody involved.

On paper, the record gap is stark. Northwestern finished 7-6 and blew out Central Michigan 34-7 in the GameAbove Sports Bowl to cap a third straight winning season under Braun. Michigan State stumbled to 4-8, with an 8-game losing streak that's the longest in program history — the kind of season that gets a coach fired in late November.

Fitzgerald inherits an MSU offense being rebuilt from scratch under new coordinator Nick Sheridan, who left Alabama to install a modern spread. That's a lot of new pieces meshing together on top of a quarterback race that isn't fully settled. Northwestern's staff, meanwhile, gets to plug a proven dual-threat weapon into a program with far more structural continuity, even with Chip Kelly running his first season as offensive coordinator.

It's still July, so both depth charts have real football left to play before kickoff — camp battles at receiver, along the offensive line, and at MSU's backup quarterback spot could all shake out differently by mid-October. But right now, the shape of this matchup favors the program with continuity over the one starting over.
