Ohio spent the offseason cleaning up a mess and still walked away with a trophy. Akron spent it trying to find a quarterback. That gap is the whole story here.

Ohio walks in with a 9-4 season and a bowl trophy behind it, plus a head coach who was already running the defense that got them there. Akron is still sorting out its quarterback room this deep into the offseason, which is a shaky foundation to lay a moneyline bet against. Back the Bobcats to win this outright.

Ohio
  • 9-4 in 2025, won Frisco Bowl 17-10 over UNLV
  • Hauser was DC on that bowl-winning defense
  • Back-to-back MAC title-game program under recent staffs
  • Fired HC Brian Smith mid-December over misconduct
  • Hauser now in his first full season as HC
  • Playing on the road in conference
Akron
  • Moorhead has continuity as a 4th-year head coach
  • Added proven passer Reese Poffenbarger via transfer
  • Home game at InfoCision Stadium
  • Finished 5-7 (4-4 MAC) in 2025
  • QB competition still unsettled per Moorhead's own spring comments
  • Facing a roster with more recent postseason success

Ohio's 2025 season ended in chaos and a party at the same time. The Bobcats fired head coach Brian Smith in mid-December over serious misconduct allegations, handed the reins to defensive coordinator John Hauser for the Frisco Bowl, and watched him beat UNLV 17-10 to cap a 9-4 season. Ohio liked what it saw enough to strip the interim tag 10 days later. Hauser now gets a full offseason and training camp to put his stamp on a program that's been to back-to-back MAC title games under two different coaches.

Akron is coming from a different place entirely. Joe Moorhead is in year 4, still hunting for the kind of stability Ohio already has, after a 5-7 finish (4-4 MAC) in 2025. The fix this offseason was at quarterback, where Moorhead brought in Reese Poffenbarger, a grad transfer who bounced through North Texas, Miami, Albany and Old Dominion and once led the entire FCS in passing yards. Moorhead called spring ball "a discovery mode" for his team — not exactly a ringing endorsement of a settled roster three months out from real games.

That contrast — a program with a clear identity and internal continuity versus one still figuring out who starts under center — is going to shape how oddsmakers see this one long before kickoff week arrives. Akron gets a home date at InfoCision Stadium out of it, which counts for something in November MAC football, but home field doesn't fix a quarterback competition by itself.

Hauser was the defensive coordinator during that 9-4 run, and his promotion signals Ohio wants to keep building around a defense that held up well enough to win a bowl game. Akron's staff, meanwhile, is banking on Poffenbarger's arm to modernize an offense that struggled to a losing record last fall. Whichever quarterback situation clarifies faster between now and November 3 is going to matter more than any preseason projection.

By the time Tuesday, November 3 rolls around, both teams will have a full body of MAC tape to lean on, which should sharpen this preview considerably as the calendar turns toward fall. For now, Ohio enters as the program with the résumé — a MAC title-game pedigree, a bowl win, and a coach who already knows what this roster is capable of. Akron has the tougher climb, and it starts with finding out if Poffenbarger is really the answer.
