Two MAC programs under new leadership collide Friday, October 2, with Ohio trying to prove last year's turnaround was real and Kent State trying to prove theirs was just getting started.

Ohio is the team with the résumé here — a 9-4 season and a bowl win carry real weight against a Kent State club that was still a losing team in 2025. Hauser's staff also isn't starting from scratch scheme-wise since he was already the defensive coordinator, which usually matters more than a splashy outside hire in year one. Back the Bobcats to win this one outright.

Ohio
  • 9-4 in 2025 with a Frisco Bowl title
  • Hauser already knew the roster as DC
  • Locker room upheaval after Smith's for-cause firing
  • First season with full head-coach control
Kent State
  • Carney sparked program's 2nd-biggest turnaround ever
  • Real momentum for the first time in years
  • Still finished 5-7 and under .500 in MAC play
  • First-year head coach still stabilizing the program

Ohio enters this one as the program with the resume: a 9-4 finish in 2025, a 6-2 mark in MAC play, and a Frisco Bowl trophy to show for it. The complicating factor is how that season actually ended. Head coach Brian Smith was placed on leave in December and then fired for cause, handing the program to John Hauser, who'd been the defensive coordinator and closed out the year as interim coach. Hauser got the full-time job on December 26 after steering the Bobcats to that bowl win over UNLV, but this is still his first fall as the guy signing off on every decision, not just the defensive game plan.

Kent State's story runs the opposite direction. The Golden Flashes fired Kenni Burns in April, handed the reins to Mark Carney, and watched him author the second-largest single-season turnaround in program history en route to a 5-7 finish. He got the interim tag stripped on October 30 and now heads into his first full offseason-to-kickoff cycle as CEO of the program, still doubling as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. His pitch is simplicity over gimmicks, and Kent State fans have more reason to believe in the building than they've had in years.

Neither staff has had a normal offseason. Ohio is trying to keep continuity alive after a messy coaching change; Kent State is trying to build on a five-win jump without the element of surprise. That tension is exactly what makes an early-October MAC game like this one worth a look, even before either roster is fully locked in.

The gap on paper is real. Ohio won two-thirds of its games last year and capped it with a bowl trophy; Kent State was still a losing team, just a dramatically less bad one than the year before. Hauser's staff also has a built-in advantage most first-year coaches don't get: continuity. He was already running the defense and already in the building when the Bobcats beat UNLV, so there's far less scheme rebuilding than a typical coaching change usually brings.

Kent State's counter is momentum and a home date. Programs coming off a five-game jump in the standings tend to carry real belief into year two, and Carney's offense is built to make new starters productive fast rather than asking them to master a complicated system. Whether that's enough to close the gap against a team that just won nine games is the whole question here, and it's why an early MAC matchup between two staffs in transition is more interesting than the records alone suggest.
