Oklahoma's playoff dream runs through the toughest building in the sport, and Georgia's title defense gets its first real gut-check right at home.

Georgia at home with a full offseason of Stockton at the helm is the side to lean on here. Oklahoma's talent has clearly improved, but asking a retooled receiver corps and a QB who missed time last year to win on the road in Athens in Week 4 is a lot to ask right out of the gate.

Oklahoma
  • Mateer returns healthy with upgraded receiver room
  • Elite returning defensive front, SEC's best in 2025
  • Livingstone, Harris rank among top national newcomers
  • Mateer's 2025 dipped hard after Auburn injury
  • First-ever road trip to Athens, tough environment
  • Offense still unproven with new pieces integrating
Georgia
  • Stockton back with nearly 3,000 yards, 24 TDs last year
  • Home field, Smart rarely loses in Athens
  • Faces first 2025 CFP opponent with extra motivation
  • Only 20 sacks last season, pass rush still a question
  • Outside cornerback depth thin behind Ellis Robinson
  • Turf toe/injury history clouds Harris, Hall availability

This one's been circled since the schedule dropped. Oklahoma's trip to Athens on Friday, September 25 is the Sooners' first-ever regular-season visit and just the second all-time meeting between these programs, with the only prior encounter being the 2018 Rose Bowl classic Georgia won in overtime. John Mateer is back for a second year as OU's starter after a 2025 season that got sidetracked by a thumb injury, and he's spent the offseason retooling his mechanics with a genuinely upgraded receiver room around him.

Georgia counters with Gunner Stockton, who quietly authored one of the more efficient seasons in the country a year ago — nearly 3,000 yards, 24 touchdowns against just 5 interceptions, and a completion rate pushing 70%. He's not just a game manager; he added almost 500 rushing yards and 10 more scores on the ground. National media has already flagged this as the game that could define Georgia's season, since it's the first 2025 CFP team the Bulldogs run into in 2026.

Both defenses carry real questions into the year. Oklahoma finished 2025 first in the SEC in total defense, scoring defense and sacks under Brent Venables, and returns a loaded front with David Stone, Jayden Jackson and Taylor Wein anchoring the line. Georgia's defense has continuity of its own but needs more pass rush after managing just 20 sacks last season, and outside cornerback depth is thin enough that an injury to Ellis Robinson would sting.

The receiver room is where Oklahoma's offense looks genuinely different. Transfer additions Parker Livingstone and Trell Harris both cracked national top-50 newcomer rankings, and Isaiah Sategna returns after a breakout year, giving Mateer more established targets than he had in his rocky debut season. If that group clicks early, this offense has a ceiling nobody attached to Oklahoma this time last year.

Georgia's health picture isn't spotless either — Gabe Harris missed the Sugar Bowl and all of spring with turf toe, and defensive tackle Jordan Hall carries an injury history that could cap his snaps in the fall. None of that changes the baseline: Kirby Smart's teams don't lose at home very often, and Stockton gets a full offseason as the unquestioned guy rather than sharing reps.

By the time Week 4 rolls around, this will be as good a measuring stick as college football offers — a Playoff team from a year ago hosting a Playoff team from a year ago, with two quarterbacks who both enter as legitimate Heisman-conversation names. Circle it now.
