Houston is being talked about as a real Big 12 contender. Oklahoma State is being talked about as a program starting completely over. This one's a measuring-stick game for both.

Houston brings back a dozen starters and a dual-threat quarterback coming off a 2,705-yard, 25-touchdown breakout, while Oklahoma State is starting almost from scratch with a brand-new roster. That gap in continuity and returning talent is the whole ballgame here, and it favors the Cougars clearly.

Oklahoma State
  • Morris and Mestemaker already have North Texas chemistry
  • Massive portal overhaul brings fresh talent infusion
  • 18-game Big 12 losing streak entering season
  • Just 4 wins combined over past two years
  • Brand-new roster with zero in-game chemistry
Houston
  • Dozen returning starters, best team in years
  • Weigman coming off 2,705-yard, 25-TD breakout
  • Finally has real offensive line depth
  • Picked only third in a loaded Big 12
  • Untested against true title contenders yet
  • Expectations pressure after years of near-misses

There's no soft way to say it: Oklahoma State blew the whole thing up. Mike Gundy's 21-year run in Stillwater ended after back-to-back miserable seasons and an 18-game Big 12 losing streak, and the Cowboys responded by bringing in Eric Morris off an 11-2 season at North Texas and gutting the roster. Over 80 new players, 62 of them transfers, are wearing orange now. It's one of the biggest roster overhauls in the country, and Morris brought his QB with him.

Drew Mestemaker followed Morris from North Texas, where the two built real chemistry together, and that continuity is the one thing Oklahoma State has going for it during a total teardown. Houston, meanwhile, isn't rebuilding anything — the Cougars are running it back with a dozen returning starters and a genuine Big 12 title case behind Conner Weigman, who broke out in 2025 with 2,705 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, 700 rushing yards and 11 more scores on the ground.

Willie Fritz has been building toward this for a couple years, and by his own account Weigman spent the offseason getting stronger, faster and more accurate. Houston was picked third in the Big 12 behind Texas Tech and BYU, which says more about how loaded the league is than about any real weakness in Houston's roster — the Cougars rank in the upper half of the conference across the board, with real strength at linebacker and in the secondary.

That's the gap this game is measuring: a program with a dozen starters back and a healthy dual-threat quarterback against a program that's essentially fielding a new team. Morris deserves patience given the North Texas track record, but patience and results are two different things in Year 1, especially on the road in a conference the Cowboys haven't been competitive in for two seasons running.

Houston's floor here is high: even a mediocre version of this offense with Weigman healthy should be able to move the ball against a Cowboys defense that's rebuilt on the fly with portal pieces who've never played together in a game that counts. The bigger question for Oklahoma State isn't talent, it's whether Mestemaker and Morris's system click fast enough to keep this from turning into the kind of night that extends the losing streak everyone in Stillwater is trying to forget.

This is the kind of game that either validates Houston as a legitimate Big 12 threat or gives Oklahoma State a signature moment early in the Morris era. Neither side has much use for style points — Houston wants proof it belongs in the title conversation, and Oklahoma State just wants proof this new roster can compete on a Friday night stage.
