Oklahoma State goes to Ames at 5-2 behind an offense that has topped 40 points in 4 of its last 5. Iowa State is 3-4, has scored 13 points in 2 straight losses and is down 3 wide receivers. A rainy forecast is the main thing that could slow the Cowboys and keep this close.

Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • 40-plus points in 4 of last 5
  • Defense took over the Colorado second half
  • Beat common foe West Virginia by 17 on the road
  • Starting OG Sexton out, no timetable
  • Lost at Houston, their last road game
  • Rain could slow a high-scoring offense
Iowa State Cyclones
  • Home game at Jack Trice
  • Scored 45 against West Virginia at home
  • Lost to Iowa by only 3
  • 13 total points across last 2 games
  • 3 receivers out or questionable
  • Outscored 39-3 at Arizona last week

This one comes down to whether Iowa State's offense can keep up. Jaylen Raynor runs it for first-year coach Jimmy Rogers, and over the last 2 weeks there hasn't been much to run: 10 points at BYU, then 3 at No. 25 Arizona. The Cyclones' 4 losses have come against Iowa, Utah, BYU and Arizona, and they lost to Iowa by just 3. So they can hang with good teams. They haven't been scoring on them.

Oklahoma State is the opposite problem. The Cowboys are 5-2 and 3-1 in the Big 12, and in conference play they've scored 41 at West Virginia, 42 against UCF, 32 in a 3-point loss at Houston and 57 against Colorado. The Colorado game was 57-24 and it wasn't close after halftime. Defensive tackle Jerry Lawson punched the ball out on the first play of the third quarter, safety Quinton Hammonds fell on it, and Oklahoma State took over on both sides from there.

The weather could slow everybody down. The Ames forecast calls for 58 degrees, a 53% chance of rain and 10 mph wind. That's not a washout, but a wet ball tends to help the team that would rather run and shorten the game. Right now that sounds like Iowa State's best chance.

One result stands out as a common opponent: both teams beat West Virginia. Oklahoma State won 41-24 in Morgantown. Iowa State won 45-42 at home. That's the version of the Cyclones they need on Saturday, the one that can trade touchdowns at Jack Trice. They haven't found it since, and they've lost 2 straight by a combined 50-13.

The injury report hurts Iowa State's passing game the most. C. Pabst is expected to miss the rest of the season, J. Bailey has been out since the start of September, and D. Overby is questionable with a knee injury. That's 3 receivers, and it helps explain the Cyclones' lack of scoring. Oklahoma State is missing OG J. Sexton and TE O. Hammond, but the offense has kept producing without both of them.

Iowa State is 1-3 in the conference and needs a win at home to stop the slide. Oklahoma State is 3-1 and has been the most explosive offense in its last 5 games. Rain is the one thing that could flatten that difference. If Raynor gets nothing going again early, a wet night in Ames could get away from the Cyclones fast.
